On-demand, DVR hit linear viewing

Networks in the US and UK are being urged to re-evaluate their programming strategies as linear TV viewing figures continue to fall, according to a report by analyst IHS.

Average daily viewing of linear broadcasts in the UK and US fell by 11 and seven minutes respectively in 2013 compared with the previous year, while so-called non-traditional TV viewing – on-demand or via DVR – now makes up nearly one in five TV minutes.

The findings were part of the Cross-Platform Television Viewing Time report compiled by IHS analysts, which analysed viewing figures during 2013. It found individuals in the UK watched 49 minutes of DVR/on-demand shows each day, while US viewers averaged 52 minutes.

VoD services such as Netflix helped to triple the amount of online longform video being watched in the US compared with the same figure in 2012, with the average individual spending nine minutes a day viewing TV content on devices other than a TV set.http://www.c21media.net/on-demand-dvr-hit-linear-viewing/?utm_source=C21Media&utm_campaign=67ad610f61-&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3bb765a3f7-67ad610f61-294373966
