Korea’s KCC Chairman Choi Sung-Joon, US FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai and India’s TRAI Chairman R.S. Sharma exchanged views on how OTT regulation and net neutrality issues are being handled in their various countries. CASBAA presented its latest survey of pay-TV and OTT rules in Asia, which pointed out that some countries are vastly overregulating pay-TV, compared to the very light touch on OTT. Vietnam Satellite Symposium 2015 (recap)

CASBAA’s Wireless Action Group (WAG) was a sponsoring partner for an ITU/Government of Vietnam Satellite Symposium in Da Nang on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Numerous member companies participated, and spoke about the need to defend C-band at the upcoming ITU WRC Conference in November.

John Medeiros used CASBAA’s “speaking” slot to show a short video produced by the Philippine Cable Television Association (PCTA), talking about the very severe interference problems they are suffering, from LTE rollout in the extended C-band. John used that as a hook to urge all concerned Asian governments to speak up in the ITU process. Asia’s interests are not the same as those of Europe and America, but if Asian governments don’t stand up and shout about it, no one will hear.

Satellite Industry Forum 2015 – Recap

More than 200 people attended the Satellite industry Forum in Singapore at the beginning of June to explore this year’s theme “Is the satellite game changing?” The programme included Stephen Spengler, CEO, Intelsat, who delivered the opening keynote and highlighted a slew of issues currently affecting the satellite sector. Michel de Rosen, Chairman & CEO, Eutelsat, gave an emphatic speech to engage delegates with the issue of protection of C-band. Delegates also heard from Myanmar’s Deputy Minister for ICT U Thaung Tin, who discussed his government’s national goals to develop the domestic satellite business. The Satellite Forum was followed by a very successful CASBAA Cocktails evening for delegates and all CASBAA members and is something to put in your diary for next time. Revisit the forum through photos, videos and read the summary of the day.

China and the World

At the inaugural China and the World conference, held in Shanghai in June, speakers focused on unique business models developing in China around online content – and how they are damaged by rampant piracy. Organised by Lightning International in partnership with CASBAA the conference examined the two sides of the coin with companies looking into China as well as China looking outward. Several CASBAA members participated with the majority of attendees coming from the domestic media scene. Monetization of content continues to be a challenge, speakers noted, and John Medeiros chaired a discussion on Piracy in the aptly named session To Pay or Not to Pay.

Pacific Islands Take A Stand on Satellite Spectrum

At the 8th APT Policy & Regulation Forum for Pacific (Tonga, mid-June), the government of Papua New Guinea led a successful effort to spark a common initiative by the Pacific Islands in favor of continued satellite use of C-band spectrum. Fiji, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, and Tuvalu joined PNG in adopting a request for an Asian Common Position to be taken up at upcoming ITU spectrum meetings. Maui Sanford, CASBAA’s consultant who attended the meeting and monitored progress, said “this was a crucial step. It was great that the Islands found their voice. They are determined to protect satellite links that are so important to them; after all there is no realistic alternative to C-band, in our region full of sun and sea… and tropical rainfade!”

CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2015 – Today

The evening is open to all members as well as delegates so offers an opportunity to build your business network and redefine your own event horizon. RSVP here

China and the World – one day event exploring TV and online opportunities

CASBAA has partnered with Lightning International to explore one of the most complex, yet lucrative, TV and online video markets in a one day conference in Shanghai. Titled “China and the World“, the event will be held at the Swissotel in Shanghai on June 10th. As China tilts toward “going global” we ask is this shift a ‘threat’ or an ‘opportunity’?

Register here for what promises to be an energetic, dynamic conversation about the future of our industry in China.

International Satellite Symposium 2015

CASBAA will be Event Partner with Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications for the International Telecommunication Union’s annual International Satellite Symposium, this year being held in Da Nang, Vietnam, on July 2-3. We will be using the opportunity to advocate for protection of the satellite C-band spectrum, which is essential to broadcast distribution everywhere in Asia. Further information here.

INTX Asia Breakfast – recap

This year’s Asia Breakfast at INTX (the rebranded Cable Show in the USA) talked about OTT television. Member companies Media Partners Asia and SNL Kagan provided informative briefs, and on-the-ground experts from China and Australia talked about the very different development patterns of OTT offerings in those two countries. CASBAA partners with the US NCTA every year to bring a discussion of Asian issues to the world’s largest pay-TV convention.

Webinar on Content Protection for Next Generation TV Content

Improvement of video technologies leads to new issues in content protection, and these were discussed in an informative CASBAA webinar on April 29th. Jim Helman, CTO of Movielabs (which develops tech solutions for the Hollywood studios), spoke about how technologies for 4K/UHD, high dynamic range, and wide color gamut are all increasing the value of premium broadcast content – and also increasing the need for protection from unauthorized use. Members can view the presentation by logging in to the CASBAA website, here.

CASBAA 2020 Blog

The CASBAA 2020 committee now offers more opportunities for engagement with their monthly six word discussion topic on Twitter as well as blog posts discussing the latest developments in media. This month’s featured post: “China to Dish Out Almost US$200 BILLION to Boost Internet Speeds – What’s It All About?” Take a look and join the conversation!

Online Advertising Support for Piracy Growing

CASBAA’s Chief Policy Officer John Medeiros spoke to the annual meeting of the ABU Copyright Committee about problems posed for all broadcasters by advertising support for online piracy. It’s a double whammy, he said: content gets stolen by the pirates, which then compete for audience eyeballs, diverting advertising revenues which otherwise could go to legitimate  platforms. He said advertising codes developed in Europe and North America demonstrated practices that should be promoted in Asia. A copy of the presentation and other information on online ad issues can be downloaded here:

Advertising and Research Committee explores Audience Measurement in Thailand

Thailand’s advertising industry is constructing a new audience measurement system, and the Advertising and Research Committee explored that in an April 22 webinar. Wannee Rutthanaphon from the Media Agency Association of Thailand (MAAT) presented a summary of the objectives and structure of the proposed Media Research Bureau of Thailand. She covered issues such as the Bureau’s internal composition, intended research methods and financing. In brief, the Bureau will be composed of two committees and a board of directors which will work with a media research firm to collect data and redistribute it to stakeholders for fees calculated on a pro rata basis. The objective of MAAT is to establish “Multi-Platform” measurement to reflect increasing use of laptops, tablets and smartphones for content viewing. Wannee established that the research firm has not yet been chosen, a tender is now open, and the selection process should be completed by July of 2015. Members who are interested in knowing more should look inside the Members Zone of the CASBAA website, here.

Webinar on Content Protection for Next Generation TV Content
CASBAA hosted Jim Helman, the CTO of MPAA affiliate MovieLabs, for a webinar presentation on Enhanced Content Protection practices being developed by Movielabs. He stressed the opportunity that exists to ensure strong protection for content developed using up-and-coming technologies like 4k and Ultra High-Definition video. Movielabs has developed framework standards which include hardware-based protection, title diversity, revocation and renewal, forensic watermarking, link protection, and certification. From a policy perspective, Jim also indicated the need for common checklists for certification across the various delivery platforms, and regimes that transcend individual format groups. MovieLabs continues to work with the industry to further define these specifications.
