Content Costs The Number One Concern for Operators

Hong Kong, 3 June 2011 – A recent survey conducted by CASBAA provides new insight into the issues of most concern for platform operators of cable TV, DTH, IPTV and other forms of video delivery to consumers across the Asia Pacific. “The latest Operators Group Survey is an important tool to gauge the prevailing attitudes of the leading platforms across Asia,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA. “The survey provides unique insights directly from the decision makers themselves.”

Chief findings from the CASBAA Operators Group Survey:

  • Content costs are the number one concern affecting overall business in 2011 (71.4%) followed by distribution costs and regulatory environment (both 42.9%)
  • 72% of respondents think the market will be better than last year but none believed it would be “the best year ever”
  • Regulatory issues and piracy were identified as the biggest threats to business in 2011

CASBAA @ 20

CASBAA @ 20
Hong Kong, 5 May 2011 – Twenty years ago on 28 May 1991, regional multichannel TV industry group CASBAA was founded. To commemorate this landmark occasion, CASBAA will kick off its 20th Anniversary celebrations with a “Members Only” birthday party on Monday, 23 May in Singapore.

Meanwhile, Asia’s pay-TV sector continues to wrestle with the challenges in this new digital world which are redefining global pay-TV business models, and the parallel need to fully digitize the region’s 360 million subscription TV households.

“We are extremely proud to mark our 20th Anniversary,” said Marcel Fenez, Chairman, CASBAA. “From tiny beginnings in early 1991 when there were few business plans, no cable TV platforms nor mature satellite TV systems, Asia’s pay-TV market is now a US$40 billion business serving more than 3.5 billion people.”

From its inception as a networking group, CASBAA has emerged as the pre-eminent industry body representing the interests of 130 corporations across 16 markets and more than 360 million households across Asia.

Over the past 20 years, Asia’s communications industry, its media market and its economic drivers have been revolutionized by the launch of thousands of pay-TV channels and platforms. On-line and internet-based distribution of content through connected media, mobility and highly interactive premium TV has enhanced traditional cable and satellite TV services.

Through it all, CASBAA has been there all along as a collective voice for change and orderly industry development.

“Today CASBAA is about far more than multichannel TV. Its Members deliver video in multiple formats to all corners of people’s lives and impact entire business communities with the promotion of multichannel advertising via the Asian Television Advertising Coalition (ATAC), through CSR campaigns, through the dissemination of industry news and as a repository for every type of industry data from government regulations to talent development,” said Fenez. “With two decades of experience, CASBAA is truly the industry spokesperson and a key trade resource.”

CASBAA has remained true to its mission to “Inform, Represent & Connect” its Members, governments and the community at large through publications, forums, networking and lobbying.

In addition to the regional hubs of Hong Kong and Singapore, the United States and Europe, CASBAA represents its Members in markets as diverse as Australia, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia, while encompassing the needs of Asia’s leading platform operators, telcos, satellite operators and providers of technology and services and every regional and national multichannel broadcaster of note.

As part of its 20th Anniversary programme CASBAA has lined-up a number of immediate objectives:

  1. To keep Members connected to CASBAA everywhere, all the time, a new mobile site will be launched shortly to provide industry updates optimized for hand-held devices.
  2. Further reinforcing the Association’s commitment to “digital in all its forms”, CASBAA recently launched the Connected Media & Mobility Group (CMMG) providing significant support for the “Digital Matters” conference scheduled 24-25 May in Singapore.
  3. The CASBAA Convention 2011 theme will soon be announced to reflect new viewing experiences available “anywhere . . . anytime”. Running from 31 October-3 November in Hong Kong, the Convention 2011 will include a compelling program which will explore today’s market drivers and define the industry future.
  4. On 23 May in Singapore and 28 July in Hong Kong, CASBAA Members past and present will be invited to join CASBAA for two “Birthday Bashes” as part of the dynamic CASBAA Mixer series, providing perfect settings for networking.
  5. The creation of a new CASBAA industry training program for new graduates, with initial funding from the China Great Wall Industry Corporation, will further develop Asia’s pay-TV industry leadership.
  6. Finally, a newly formed “CASBAA Advisory Group” has been created to ensure that the Association retains access to the experience and collective wisdom of industry executives who have previously served in the Asia Pacific and championed CASBAA to great effect.

“We have seen incredible changes in the last 20 years but one thing remains the same – CASBAA will always be THE voice for multichannel TV in Asia,” added Fenez.

Pay TV is not a luxury

Hong Kong (24 March 2011) – The government of India must re-think its approach to satellite services and start treating DTH and cable TV suppliers as a mass market communications providers rather than a luxury sector — and adjust tax levels appropriately. This was clearest message from the CASBAA India Satellite Industry Forum on Tuesday, 22 March 2011 in New Delhi.

“With 120 million multichannel TV viewers including 30 million DTH subscribers, India is the one most exciting growth opportunities in the world,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA. “However there remain some massive challenges that need to be surmounted before India can take its place at the forefront of the global market. A backward-looking government approach to Indian pay-TV and other communications services is one of the biggest problems.”

Taxation was a hot topic, with levies on DTH operators now standing at 35% – an unheard-of burden for an entertainment product that is an everyday experience for hundreds of millions of Indians. Investment restrictions and retail price caps were also highlighted as crucial impediments to growth. It was pointed out that the cable sector doesn’t face many of the same controls and tax enforcement of the cable sector is weak because of the structural under-declaration of subscriber numbers both to government and broadcasters alike.

“Time and again we heard that companies are hard pressed to make money in the content industry thanks to regulatory constraints, under-declaration, high carriage fees and rising costs,” said Twiston Davies.

More positively, it was projected that, within a year, a switch-off of analogue cable services will be imposed in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, with the rest of the country migrating from analogue to digital by 2015. This technology migration will be propelled partly by consumer pressures and demands that children’s content should be in local languages supported by more pay TV “shelf space”. Apart from analogue-to-digital convergence, the rise of Internet/IPTV and 3G-4G delivery systems will also gain momentum.

Speakers at the India Satellite Industry Forum included industry and government experts such as George Elias (Principal Advisor – Broadcast & Policy, TRAI), Rajiv Anand (Executive Director, PwC), Vikram Chandra (CEO, NDTV Convergence), Praveen Malhotra (Senior VP, Sales, Reliance Broadcast Network), Avinash Kaul (CEO, Zoom Entertainment Network), Joy Chakraborthy (Chief Revenue Officer, Zee), Terry Bleakley (VP, AP Sales, Intelsat) and Ravi Mansukhani (MD & CEO, IndusInd Media & Communication). Supporters of the Forum included Presenting Sponsor France 24 and Sponsors Asia Broadcast Satellite, AsiaSat, Eutelsat Communications, Intelsat, MEASAT and SES World Skies.

“As a platform for key industry stakeholders to exchange views and obtain important information, the CASBAA India Satellite Industry Forum is an example of the way the Association continues to inform, represent and connect with our members,” added Twiston Davies.

Taxing Issues in India

Taxing Issues in India

Hong Kong (14 March 2011) – The recent ruling by the Delhi High Court on tax payments for Foreign Satellite Operators operating over India has focused urgent attention on the dynamic satellite broadcasting industry. To shed further light on this and many other issues, the CASBAA India Satellite Industry Forum is scheduled for 22 March 2011 at the Shangri-La Hotel, New Delhi.

Non-domestic satellite operators have been forced to deal with tax litigation in India for more than a decade, but how will this latest decision affect the satellite sector in India and what are the potential ramifications of the recent decision?

“Along with the ‘back haul’ (long distance delivery) of hundreds of satellite TV channels into India and with DTH homes now topping an estimated 35 million connections, India’s satellite market is growing at an astounding rate,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA. “However, in order to facilitate continued expansion, it is of great importance to examine the pressing issues affecting the business and that is where the CASBAA India Satellite Industry Forum plays a vital role.”

Covering critical items such as bandwidth limitations, content monetization and the impact of the newest mobile broadband and cable technologies, the CASBAA India Satellite Industry Forum will gather both domestic and international business leaders and officials to debate the challenges facing the industry today and tomorrow.

Among confirmed speakers are George Elias (Principal Advisor – Broadcast & Policy, TRAI), Rajiv Anand (Executive Director, PwC), Vikram Chandra (CEO, NDTV Convergence), Sunil Lulla (CEO, Times Television Network), Tarun Katial (CEO, Reliance Broadcast Network), Joy Chakraborthy (Chief Revenue Officer, Zee), Terry Bleakley (VP, AP Sales, Intelsat), Raj Malik (SVP of Sales, ABS) and Ravi Mansukhani (MD & CEO, IndusInd Media & Communication).

“The strength of this annual CASBAA Forum is its powerful line-up of industry experts who bring clarity into a market that can be both dynamic and mystifying at the same time,” added Twiston Davies.

Transparency the key for Online Video in China

HONG KONG (7 March 2011) – Trust and transparency while building strong partnerships with content providers, advertisers and end users are the keys to the development of China’s online video market, according to speakers at the CASBAA Online Video in China forum on 2 March 2011 in Beijing.

Keynote speaker Johannes Larcher, SVP International, Hulu, said the US-based online platform focuses on three key points – monetization of content, secure distribution and shared risk. Larcher added that Hulu has more than 250 content partners and 600 advertising partners.

With over 100 delegates and speakers in attendance, the forum provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss in depth the issues associated with the growing popularity of consuming video over the Internet in China.

“Since China is one of the biggest and fastest growing markets in Asia, and indeed the world, it makes sense to keep focusing our attention on developments that will affect the broadcasting industry there,” said Marcel Fenez, Chairman of CASBAA. “While traditional television reigns supreme, a projected 300 million Chinese viewers watching video online by the end of 2011 means that it is vitally important to identify the opportunities and hurdles that will affect business development in the future.”

With ongoing advancements in technology, online video is the natural progression of any linear broadcasting model with major stakeholders advocating a TV everywhere approach. However, monetisation is a key challenge for online video as hard data on audience measurement to attract advertisers to this medium is difficult to source commented several of the speakers at the CASBAA event.

And, while broadcasters are increasingly turning to multi-platform methods of content delivery, infrastructure in terms of bandwidth speed is another concern raised. While this situation is improving, there is still uncertainty as to what sort of collaboration, if any, there will be with telcos in the future.

Also, copyright issues and the market itself are not ‘standardized’, where some on-line video services are using licensed content while others are not.

However, according to CMM-I Managing Director Anke Redl, “Chinese online video sites are becoming increasingly sophisticated in terms of how they acquire both international and domestic licensed programs, as well as commission relevant content themselves.”

These topics and more were debated by some of the most influential speakers and panelists dealing with the China market. In attendance at the forum were the likes of Ian Chin (Bestv), Chen Zu (Tudou.com), Sarah Zhang (Baidu Qiyi), Scarlett Li (Zebra Media), Huang Xinquan (China Radio International Mobile TV), Cui Bin (China Vision Media Group) and many others.

“As broadcasters evolve their business strategies to take advantage of new platforms to complement traditional television models, CASBAA will continue to develop events such as Online Video in China in order to bring some much needed focus in this vast market,” added Fenez.

For more information, please visit the Online Video in China page on the CASBAA website.
