Demystifying Middle Kingdom Video Services

Demystifying Middle Kingdom Video Services

HONG KONG (18 February 2011) – CASBAA is heading to the Middle Kingdom where the spotlight will focus on Online Video in China on 2 March 2011 at the News Plaza Hotel, Beijing.

As one of Asia’s most dynamic media and communications markets, China has impressed the world with the unprecedented speed with which it has been transformed into a global industry powerhouse. Ever evolving, China has rapidly expanded its TV and communications market to meet the needs of a vast consumer base.

Today, online video ranks as the fifth most popular online diversion for China’s Internet population. An estimated 222 million Chinese, or 65% of China’s online population, spend at least part of their time online watching video. Viewer numbers are expected to grow to an estimated 300 million by the end of 2011.

But what are the challenges for global and domestic video content owners along with technology and service suppliers? Who gets to play? Who gets to pay?

Most importantly, who gets to collect from potentially hundreds of millions of video service connections? Is China just an advertising market or will subscriptions finally trump everything?

“If you are doing business in Asia, you simply cannot ignore the presence and influence of China,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO, CASBAA. “With its vast population steadily adopting and adapting to a digital lifestyle, online video consumption continues to increase in volume and complexity.”

CASBAA’s Online Video in China, co-organised with China market specialist CMMI, is where Chinese and global content developers and service providers will share data on issues of vital importance including intellectual property rights, the “Great Firewall” of China and how to monetise ad-supported “No Subscription” services.

A closed door event with limited seats available, delegates will have the opportunity to discuss the potential, challenges, policies and regulations for online video in China.

Among the initial confirmed speakers for Online Video in China are Zu Chen, VP of Content & Chief Editor, Tudou.com; Johannes Larcher, SVP International, Hulu; Jeanette Chan, Partner, Paul Weiss; Graham Kill, CEO, Irdeto; William Pfeiffer, CEO, Tiger Gate; and, Huang Xinquan, Director of Content Cooperation and Marketing, Mobile TV, China Radio International.

Thai PM Endorses the Power of Pay-TV

HONG KONG (January 26, 2011) – CASBAA’s Thailand in View forum, organised in association with the Satellite Television Association of Thailand, concluded on Thursday, January 20, 2011 with an endorsement of the power of pay-TV by H.E. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Prime Minister of Thailand.

The Prime Minister opened the conference examining the opportunities and challenges affecting the broadcasting sector by championing regulatory change to support the growth of the cable and satellite broadcast industry as a constructive and ethical medium in Thailand. (For a transcript of the Prime Minister’s opening remarks, please click here.)

“We were greatly encouraged to hear H.E. Abhisit Vejjajiva’s whole-hearted support of the growth of cable and satellite TV in Thailand,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA. “Even though there remain grey market practices, we are on the right track to creating an environment to foster the future expansion of this dynamic market.”

Speakers agreed that for the phenomenal growth to continue, and for the industry to thrive, ethical business practices and increased transparency were needed to drive local and international investment.

Among issues highlighted during the meeting was the need for a valid licensing process for pay-TV operators and in the appointment of members to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission. The timely formation of a knowledgeable and responsible NBTC will be crucial.

Industry and government commitments to intellectual property rights were another key concern that will directly affect the future of video distribution in Thailand. With estimated losses in the range of US$241 million due to pay-TV signal theft in 2010, Thailand is second only to India in terms of revenue leakage in Asia.

However, the opportunities for growth are still tremendous. With the goal of full monetisation of the subscriber base, cable and satellite TV penetration currently sits at roughly 50% of all television households in Thailand and is expected to grow rapidly under the right conditions.

“Thailand in View offered an exceptional forum for stakeholders in the country’s broadcasting industry to share their views on the market,” continued Twiston Davies. “It is the goal of CASBAA to continue to provide events and publications where our members can access the information they need to optimise local and international investment in Asia.”

CASBAA’s Thailand in View was generously sponsored by ITV, The Nielsen Company, True Visions and Universal Networks International.

Powering Thai Pay TV

HONG KONG (January 6, 2011) – CASBAA will kick start the new year with its first major event of 2011, the Thailand in View seminar in Bangkok on January 20, 2011 at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Thailand’s newly thriving cable and satellite TV industry has reached more than 50% penetration – with over 10 million connections out of a total of 20 million TV households and with ad expenditure estimated at nearly two billion baht (US$60 million) in 2010. In a country with so much growth potential, however, understanding its regulatory and cultural nuances is essential for any participant to survive, much less thrive.

CASBAA’s Thailand in View seminar, organised in association with the Satellite Television Association of Thailand (STAT), will examine the key issues affecting the broadcasting sector and how they are altering the national media and communications landscape through changes in broadcasting laws, increased distribution and the fast-growing advertising market.

“Thailand is truly one of Asia’s fastest growing markets with seemingly limitless growth opportunities,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO, CASBAA. “Our Thailand in View seminar, backed by our newly published Thailand in View report, which is exclusively available to CASBAA Members, will identify the opportunities and what potential hurdles could impede success.”

The day-long Thailand in View meeting has been designed to touch on a variety of important topics including overviews of the country’s pay-TV, satellite TV and news TV markets, with an in-depth analysis of government regulations and their impact on industry growth, advertising potential and distribution models.

Among the powerhouse speakers lined up for the seminar are H.E. Alongkorn Ponlaboot, Deputy Minister of Commerce and Chairman of the Subcommittee, Administration of Creative Economy Policy, Government of Thailand; Senator Somchai Sawaengkarn, Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights, Rights and Liberties and Consumer Protection, Government of Thailand; Tanawat Wansom, President, MCOT; Sinthu Peatrarut, Managing Director, AGB Nielsen Media Research; Chaipranin Visuthipol, President, Advertising Association of Thailand; Niphon Naksompop, President, Satellite Television Association of Thailand; Vilasinee Chivanond, Managing Director, Cable Thai Holdings; and, host Dominique Ullmann, Managing Director, Moving TV.

To complement the seminar, CASBAA will publish the Thailand in View market report in Q1 of 2011. Covering the latest market developments, regulatory and piracy updates and advertising data, the Thailand in View country report will provide all the essential information on the Thailand pay-TV industry at your fingertips.

Digital Visions at Addressable India

india50
New Delhi, November 29th, 2010
— While the Government of India has been aggressively promoting the digitalisation of India’s cable TV and satellite TV sectors, seven powerful industry groups will openly debate their views for the first time ever on a single platform in New Delhi on December 9th 2010.

Tagged Addressable India and coordinated by regional body CASBAA, the meeting will be co-hosted with the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), the News Broadcasters Association (NBA), the Cable Operators Federation of India (COFI), the MSO Alliance, the DTH Association of India and the IPTV India Forum and supported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Underwriters of the day-long debate include Oracle Communications (Main Sponsor), Zee Network (Lunch Sponsor), Tata Sky (Coffee Break Sponsor), HBO Asia (Cocktail Sponsor) and Tata Communications (Session Sponsor).

Meanwhile, the forum will feature keynote addresses from Raghu Menon, Secretary of MIB, who will provide “The Digital Vision” and J.S. “The underlying purpose of Addressable India is to establish a level of consensus between industry and government on how best to execute on some immensely ambitious plans,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO CASBAA.

“Our success will be defined by the ability of the participants to lay out a definable road map for digitally connecting almost 100 million pay-TV homes and building a new communications world for hundreds of millions of Indians. We all have a great responsibility. With consensus we can make a difference.”
