MTV EXIT wins Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award 2009

Hong Kong, 4 November 2009 – MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) has won this year’s Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for producing the music video for Radiohead’s “All I Need”.

The powerful video gives insight into the realities of exploitative child labour and shows that we are all touched by it no matter where we live and that we all have a role to play in ending child exploitation and trafficking.

Radiohead, a popular and influential alternative rock band from the UK, gave MTV EXIT the right to use “All I Need” off their In Rainbows album and to produce the official video for the single as a way to reach a huge audience of young people and show them the realities of trafficking and exploitative child labour.

The music video is shown in split screen: one side depicting a day in the life of a young boy from an affluent country; the other showing the day in the life of a boy being forced to work in a sweatshop.

“The idea of fusing a social message into a creative format like a music video was something that we had wanted to experiment with for some time.” said Simon Goff, the MTV EXIT Campaign Director. “By integrating the message into this format, we could reach many more people than if we created a standard public service announcement. The reaction of the audience has been extremely positive. It has also created a debate about the issue, a social dialogue, which is incredibly important and demonstrates that the power of the video has motivated people to discuss the issue.”

“MTV EXIT has creatively and effectively found a way to reach millions of young people around the world with a powerful message about exploitative child labour,” said Madeline Eisner, UNICEF Regional Communication Advisor for the East Asia and Pacific region. “This year mark the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world. Yet, as the video shows, there are still children in Asia trapped in hazardous and exploitative labour, robbing them of their right to a childhood, to an education, to a future. The fight against exploitative child labour continues, and it can be won. MTV EXIT is contributing to this important effort.”

This music video is part of the MTV EXIT campaign, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking.

Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) said: “Broadcast platforms of all kinds are one of the most powerful tools for educating and promoting child rights issues. On behalf of the industry, CASBAA salutes the on-going participation of broadcasters from across the Asia Pacific region in this year’s Award process.”
The winning entry was selected by a panel of jurors made up of distinguished television producers and industry representatives including: Hitoshi Furukawa of Children’s Programs Department of NHK Educational Corporation (Japan), Bella Stjerne of SVT Sveriges Television (Sweden), Aparna Sanyal of Mixed Media Productions (India), Jesse Stern of InFocus Asia (Thailand), Syahrizan Mansor of Nickelodeon (Singapore) and Virginia Lim of SPE Networks (Singapore).

“This music video was a very creative production, and by leveraging a popular mainstream band like Radiohead for broad youth appeal, it was able to deliver a message to its target market that will help stop the exploitation of children in developing countries,” ABU Acting Secretary-General, David Astley, said. “The MTV EXIT campaign on child labour is an excellent example of how a media partnership with a development agency like USAID can raise public awareness of an important social issue,” he added.

The Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award will be given to MTV EXIT on 4 November in Hong Kong during the CASBAA Convention. Created by CASBAA, ABU and UNICEF in 2001, the Award is given annually to the best television programme on a child rights issue produced in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, the Award received nearly 40 entries from 15 countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Qatar, the Philippines and Thailand.

CASBAA release – The CASBAA Bollywood Ball: Caring for kids

Hong Kong, 22 October, 2009 – The CASBAA Charity Ball, the must attend charity event in the pay-TV industry social calendar, will bring the CASBAA Convention 2009 to a climatic end on Nov 6th at the Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong.

But the Bollywood themed extravaganza sponsored by Turner also has a serious mission: to raise funds for the Dream School Foundation (DSF) in Bangalore, India through CASBAA’s charity partner, Variety the Children’s Charity.

CASBAA recently announced a partnership with Variety, a major fundraiser for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in Asia. Variety brings together the entertainment industry and the general public to fund specific capital projects for needy children and organisations.

Proceeds from the CASBAA Charity Bollywood Ball will fund the purchase of computer equipment for three DSF schools, providing disadvantaged children in India with practical support through technology and communication tools normally only accessible for the most privileged schools.

“CASBAA is proud to work with Variety the Children’s Charity to help the children of India. With our strong network and unparalleled resources within the Asian subscription TV industry, the Association is committed to working closely with its members to support the community at large,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of CASBAA.

“On behalf of Variety, I express our grateful thanks to CASBAA. We are delighted that more children are going to benefit through this new partnership,” said Phil Neilson, Chief Barker of Variety the Children’s Charity.

The CASBAA Convention 2009 will also see the launch of Women Media Networks (WMN) in the Asia Pacific region with a breakfast event on Nov 3rd at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong. The event will feature a line-up of Asia’s most prominent and inspirational leaders and women from across the media industry.

WMN is a new not-for-profit media organisation creating a regional network to empower women and help them realise their full potential.

CASBAA release – CASBAA welcomes Thailand’s global pay-TV model

Hong Kong, 8 October, 2009 – The Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) today welcomed the implementation of the standard dual-revenue model for pay-TV services in Thailand.

“With the Mass Communications Organization of Thailand (MCOT) allowing TrueVisions to carry commercials in accordance with existing Thai law the process of normalization is complete,” said CASBAA CEO Simon Twiston Davies.

Advertising may now appear on TrueVisions’ full bouquet of international and domestic channels, in line with the regulations covering the other Thai free and pay-TV channels.

Twiston Davies noted that prior to the 2007 approval of the Broadcasting and Television Business Act, Thailand was the only country in Asia where pay-TV advertising was totally prohibited.

“It was an anomalous situation. Even international advertising had to be replaced by a static billboard. Consumers, the channels and the pay-TV operators all disliked it.”

The passage of the Broadcasting and Television Business Act set the stage for today’s move by MCOT to implement the law.

“The move to a dual revenue stream advances the modernization of Thailand’s pay-TV industry,” said Twiston Davies, “and everybody in the value chain benefits: consumers, operators and government.”

CASBAA release – CASBAA hails Indonesian cable-TV plan

Hong Kong, 13 August, 2009 – CASBAA today applauded the launch of an Indonesian government campaign to regularize the country’s cable-TV industry. Speaking at an August 10 “National Seminar on Pay-TV Broadcasting” that launched the campaign, Bambang Subijantoro, Director of Broadcasting in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Depkominfo) noted that Indonesia has a dynamic and rapidly growing pay-TV industry, but that provincial cable companies were largely operating in the “informal” sector, without proper licenses.

The government’s new campaign, Mr. Bambang said, was aimed at correcting that situation, and instilling respect for national laws – including intellectual property law – into the industry. Dr. Andi N. Sommeng, Indonesia’s Director-General of Intellectual Property, noted that re-distributing channels without authorization from the rights holder was illegal, punishable by fines and potentially prison terms.

“This seminar is an excellent start to putting Indonesia’s pay-TV industry on a professional, sustainable footing,” said CASBAA CEO Simon Twiston Davies. “We are very pleased to be part of a public-private partnership supporting this effort. We congratulate our Indonesian partners – led by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Depkominfo) – on the forthright steps they are taking to deal with the problems of the industry, and set a clear future path for growth and development.”

CASBAA is part of a coalition of government agencies and industry players participating in the just-launched campaign. Local lead organisers include, alongside the Depkominfo, the Indonesian industry association APMI (Asosiasi Penyelenggara Multimedia Indonesia) and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).

During the seminar, CASBAA’s views were presented by leading Jakarta IP expert (and founder of the Indonesian Intellectual Property Association) Gunawan Suryomurcito. Mr. Gunawan told the audience that investment in pay-TV provides Indonesia with the opportunity to develop high quality local content that can drive domestic industry growth, and then in turn be distributed internationally.

In his speech to the National Seminar, Mr. Bambang noted that there are estimated to be over 2,700 pay-TV companies in Indonesia, the vast majority of which are small cable companies in provincial areas. Few had the licenses required by law, he said, but with the final judicial reviews of licensing policy completed in 2007, the government was now ready to move forward.

The current program is designed to educate the provincial operators about their responsibilities under the law, and about the need to avoid illegal re-distribution of content. Next, the campaign moves into an “outreach” phase, with seminars and discussions planned in 7 major provincial centres between now and the end of the year.

Following that, Depkominfo is gearing up to put its licensing process into high gear, and after a “grace period” lasting a few months, cable operators will be required to have the requisite licenses, and follow Indonesian IP law on content distribution, or suffer legal penalties.

The National Seminar to launch the event was called by Depkominfo Director-General for Communications and Information Dissemination Freddy H. Tulung. In remarks prepared for the seminar, the Director-General said there are still many pay-TV companies who simply do not understand how to correctly conduct a broadcasting business. The government’s aim, he said, was to show the participants in the industry how they could follow the law, and build their businesses.

“CASBAA will continue to be a strong supporter and active participant in this process,” said Mr. Twiston Davies. “We think this initiative by the Indonesian government and APMI represents the best way to set this industry on a sustainable growth path for the future. It should be a model for other governments in Southeast Asia, where several TV markets are enfeebled by continuing piracy.”
