CASBAA Convention 2013 – Day 2 Recap

Strategies to capture eyeballs drive hot debate at CASBAA 2013

Hong Kong, 24 October 2013 – New strategies to capture and retain viewers, while increasing advertisement potential, were key areas of focus on the second day of the CASBAA 2013 in Hong Kong. Global and Asian industry leaders joined media personalities to examine successful strategies and techniques.

“CASBAA’s commitment to promoting the effectiveness of multichannel TV as a marketing tool and raising the industry profile among advertisers was in full force, with several panels focusing on topics including branded content, audience measurement and the value of partnerships,” said Marcel Fenez, Chairman, CEO. “Our closing panel on satellite services and C-band usage also reflected the diverse issues affecting our industry today.”

Many participants agreed that local relevancy was crucial in Asia. According to Zanny Liu, Senior Manager, Advertising Sales, A+E Networks Asia, noted that the Ride N’ Seek documentary series, featuring US-born biker Jaime Dempsey and her Harley-Davidson, successfully met Malaysian viewers’ expectations. Comments on Jaime Dempsey’s Facebook page showed that “Malaysia fans want more,” said Mr. Liu.

Peter Giakoumelos, VP, Advertising Sales, Discovery Network Asia Pacific, also advised not to restrict content delivery to a few platforms: “Today, the media landscape is diverse and redefined. All we have done is to satisfy curiosity, and provide the highest quality content that entertains, engages and enlightens.”

Use of branded content is also gaining traction in Asia. According to Ah Jin Jung, Senior Regional Sales Manager, Turner Broadcasting Systems Asia Pacific, their choice of using branded content for the Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids financial literacy programme allowed them to “maximise exposure and integrate into the kids’ lifestyles.”

Kar-Tai Koh, Global Brand Manager, Shell Advance Motorcycle, noted that branded content can help to create a bond between the brand and the target audience. Commenting on the Freedom Riders Asia series, he noted: “We wanted Shell to develop a bond with the biking community. And the bikers wanted to see, hear, and be part of it.” However, participants also highlighted looming challenges. “The biggest challenge that we have is to create interesting and engaging content, and deliver the client’s messages to the customers at the same time,” said Mr. Mike Rich, CEO, Content (APAC), GroupM.

Measuring pay TV effectiveness was another hot topic during the Convention. Although this debate has been raging for years, participants noted that the alternative measurement system, Return Path Data (RPD), is showing promise. “RPD provides data and information for the niche channels among different segments,” said Henry Robles, Research Director, Audience Research & Analysis, NBCUniversal. Nick Burfitt, Global Director, Kantar Media Audiences, who observed that RPD is becoming widespread, noted: “It can fill some of the gaps among the traditional [measurement] methods and provide solutions.”

However, Janice Lee, Managing Director, TV & New Media, PCCW argued that RPD will not replace but supplement traditional methods. “Consumer behaviours are changing and cannot be captured yet, and we also have more OTT users at the same time. RPD supplements traditional [measurement] methods in order to provide a comprehensive view,” she added.

The day ended with an intense panel discussion that examined the challenges facing content delivery in Asia. “Supply and demand always comes together,” observed Bill Wade, President & CEO, AsiaSat. “The selling point is to match the product to the customer, and the key is to find the right customers,” added Mohamed Youssif, COO, Asia Broadcast Satellite.

When questioned on the importance of satellite transmission given the growth and penetration of terrestrial broadband, panellists highlighted that for “small and advanced” areas like Hong Kong this hold true, but not for wide geographies like Thailand and Malaysia, which has areas where terrestrial broadband is not available everywhere.

The panellists then took a close look at ITU’s recent announcement to open up C-band frequencies for use by mobile devices. “This is a whole new bargain,” said Mr. Wade. “We need to win the battle,” Paul Brown-Kenyon, CEO, MEASAT claimed. “And we need to raise customer awareness on the resulting impact [of how this will affect quality of service].” Andrew Jordan, EVP Strategic Projects, Eutelsat questioned whether there is a need for more frequency, while Mr. Youssif added: “To me, [ITU] is just bullying.”

CASBAA Convention 2013 – Day 1 Recap

Stellar DTT growth, piracy ignite insightful discussions at CASBAA 2013

Hong Kong, 23 October 2013 – Asia Pacific’s exploding pay-TV market, piracy and the challenges of regulations took the spotlight on the first day of the CASBAA Convention 2013, entitled Change is ON THE AIR. Starring global and Asian industry leaders, regulators, media personalities and technologists, the conference discussed key opportunities and concerns that are shaping the media and broadcasting industry.

“This year’s Convention celebrates change in all its many forms in the Asia Pacific and global multichannel TV industry,” said Marcel Fenez, Chairman, CASBAA. “Our diverse range of expert speakers, representing the whole broadcasting value chain, will explore the motivating factors driving this change and discuss how the market can adapt and profit from this evolution.”

The annual convention began with an insightful look at Hong Kong’s own development. John Tsang Chun-wah, Financial Secretary, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) remarked that the two new free-to-air television licenses awarded in October “will change the landscape of terrestrial TV broadcasting industry in Hong Kong and will bring more choices for consumers.”

Mr. Tsang said that the penetration of digital terrestrial TV (DTT) is growing at a satisfactory rate “with more than 80 per cent of our households already enjoying the greater programme variety and better picture quality of DTT.” Hong Kong’s high mobile penetration, at over 230 per cent, is also presenting new opportunities for mobile data services development, with the Government assisting by auctioning off new spectrums.

Thailand is following a slightly different route in building its DTT market. Natee Sukonrat, Vice Chairman, National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) said the Thai government would auction off the rights to broadcast DTT channels to the highest bidders, and use the proceeds to subsidize digital receivers for consumers. Dr. Natee also said that years of lax regulation has made the Commission’s job difficult, with the existence of many illegal operators. He admitted that NBTC “cannot do everything by ourselves” but will have to cooperate with the government and industry as they look to close cable operations that carry pirated or unlicensed content or violate intellectual property.

Meanwhile, Yves Bigot, CEO, TV5MONDE noted that broadcasters need to adopt new tools to reach today’s audience or risk losing them to smaller, nimbler niche players. He discussed how his company was able to successfully roll out OTT services to complement its linear channels business. Jean-Briac Perrette, Chief Digital Officer, Discovery Communications highlighted the value of a multi-channel approach to engaging the audience when it discussed its successful launch of their TestTube service.

Piracy took the spotlight at a panel discussion entitled The “P” Word. Paul Berriman, Group CTO, PCCW, Jonathan Spink, CEO, HBO Asia, Joe Welch, SVP Government Relations, Asia, 21st Century Fox, and Teymoor Nabili, Presenter/Executive Editor, Channel NewsAsia explored different piracy techniques, and noted that there is no single solution to eliminating it. Participants admitted that it is time to get one step ahead of pirates and called for an industry-wide effort to control piracy at all fronts.

Growth and challenges in key countries, especially Indonesia and India, drove further interest. Rudy Tanoesoedibjo, CEO & President Director, PT MNC Sky Vision explained that he is “not in the business of making money but [one] of entertaining, empowering and education for my nation.” He also called for broadcasters to differentiate themselves else “you are just selling a commodity.”

Monica Tata, MD, South Asia, HBO India joined Ravi Mansukhani, MD, IMCL, Amit Arora, EVP, IndiaCast, and Deepak Jacob, President & General Counsel, STAR India to remark that Indian consumers are willing to pay for more digital services if they are relevant to their needs. Mr. Mansukhani added that it is becoming vital to know your customers.

Singapore, 26 June 2013 –CASBAA’s annual Satellite Industry Forum took place on Monday, June 17 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, attracting over 200 delegates, speakers, media, and guests from across the region and around the world. Long a staple in the industry calendar, this year’s forum explored “An Industry in Transition” with keynotes and panel discussions with satellite experts and leaders representing all facets of the industry.

“CASBAA’s Satellite Industry Forum continues to evolve and grow to meet the needs of the Asia Pacific market,” said Christopher Slaughter, CEO, CASBAA. “This is indeed an industry that is in constant transition and it is our goal to assemble the best line-up of speakers to examine the many variables affecting the industry today and the outcomes for tomorrow.”

Covering issues including spectrum and market access, regulatory regimes, and identifying growth markets and future trends in the region, panelists also explored emerging satellite technologies, the booming launch services sector and the dynamic and complicated Indian market.

Opening this year’s forum, Gwynne Shotwell, President, SpaceX, commented on the uniqueness of the Asian region and how it was a tremendous market for launch vehicles as well as satellites – with the most growth projected for fixed satellite services over the next decade.

Thomas Choi, CEO, Asia Broadcast Satellite, pointed out that: “Some of the key issues Asian satellite operators are dealing with include an extreme level of competition in Asia with over 70 satellites in this region and over 20 operators providing some kind of services. Over the past 10 years we’ve actually had very depressed prices, the lowest prices for C-band capacity have been in the Asia Pacific market.”

On a buoyant note, Paul Brown-Kenyon, Chairman, CASBAA Satellite Industry Committee; CEO, MEASAT said: “The future is…different. It’s going to be an exciting future – lots of innovation, lots of change – but the key thing is it’s uncertain. The trick is to figure out how to deal with that uncertainty – how to build in the flexibility, to evolve and capture the growth. It is going to come in interesting areas.”

Throughout the day, delegates also heard from a number of distinguished panelists from organisations including APT Satellite, Encompass Digital Media Asia, GlobeCast Asia, Inmarsat, ITU, Morgan Stanley, NewSat, Newtec, O3b Networks, and many others debate on a variety of other hot-button issues and newsworthy topics.

Partners for the CASBAA Satellite Industry Forum 2013 included Supporting Sponsor JSAT and Sponsors Arianespace, AsiaSat, Eutelsat, Marsh, MEASAT, MHI Launch Services, SES, SpaceX and SSL.
