83 million fake Facebook accounts

83 Million Facebook Accounts Are Fake

August 2, 2012 – The number of fake accounts on Facebook is roughly the size of Egypt’s population and larger than most of the world’s countries, the company disclosed this week.

In a 10-Q filing, Facebook acknowledged that a total of 8.7% — or 83 million — accounts on the network are bogus. Of that 8.7%, 4.8% are duplicate accounts, 2.4% are user-misclassified accounts and 1.5% are “undesirable” accounts, a.k.a. spam.

Netflix traffic down 25%

Netflix lost 25% of streaming traffic to Olympics, report says

NEW YORK (August 2, 2012) — In the competition for streaming video eyeballs, Olympic gold stole some of Netflix’s luster this weekend.

Netflix streaming in the U.S. fell 25% “from normal levels” this past Sunday, according to a Procera Networks report this week. The report pinned the blame squarely on the Games, which kicked off July 27.

Last week, Reed Hastings and Co. warned in Netflix’s earnings report that Olympic viewing will have “a negative impact” for the current quarter — on both Netflix (NFLX) watching and on new subscriptions.

Internet traffic costs plummet

August 2, 2012 – Despite all the catastrophising about rising costs and flattening revenues for mobile telcos and Internet access providers generally, IP transit prices, at least, are actually in steepening decline according to TeleGeography. By I.D. Scales.

IP transit is a key incremental cost for Internet providers. It’s what a Tier One Internet backbone provider (one of the huge ones which is broadly peered to the other huge backbone providers) charges other, smaller or regionally-based ISPs or large Internet businesses to carry their traffic across the Internet. The more data users ‘consume’ the greater aggregate transit capacity a provider must buy to cope with demand.

If we assume that IP transit is a highly competitive market – which it appears to be – it gives us the best idea of what the underlying Internet connectivity costs actually are and – just as important – how fast they are heading down (or not).

NDTV case may trigger Indian BARC

NDTV lawsuit may trigger Govt action on BARC

(1 August 2012) NEW DELHI: The petition filed by NDTV against TAM in New York may force the Government to speed up BARC’s progress on revamping the television audience measurement system, particulary since the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) has failed to do so.

In fact, the Government had expressed its concern to IBF officials over a month earlier about the delay in moving the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) forward so that the first audience survey report could come by July next year.

In a meeting held at the initiative of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry a few weeks earlier, Additional Secretary Rajiv Takru had told IBF that the government may step in to ensure that the timeline is met.

YouTube to invest $200m to market channels

YouTube Cranks Up Channel Spending

July 30, 2012 – For Google Inc.’s YouTube it was a $150 million experiment: Seed dozens of new video “channels” on its Web service and see what works.

So far, Google likes what it sees from the eight-month effort. The company says it will put in another $200 million to market the channels as it attempts to upgrade its content from simple user-generated videos and to lure more viewers and advertising.

The site has launched nearly 100 new channels so far this year, attracting talent such as actor Amy Poehler to create or star in original episodes in an effort to draw new audiences—and blue-chip advertisers.

Connected TVs to reach 650m by 2017

Global IPTV subscribers to triple

01 August, 2012: The number of homes paying for IPTV will rocket to 165 million by end-2017, up from 51 million at end-2011 and from only 7.5 million at end-2007, according to a new report from Digital TV Research. The Global IPTV Forecasts report estimates that China will supply 77 million (47%) of the 2017 total, up from only 14 million (28%) in 2011 and only 350,000 (5%) at end-2007.

Simon Murray, report author, said: “Some may be surprised to see the USA in second place by 2017 [with 14.4 million subs]. US telcos are aggressively marketing their IPTV products, with both Fios and U-Verse appearing in the top 10 pay TV operators.”

Of the 114 million subscribers to be added between 2011 and 2017, 86 million will be from the Asia Pacific region – or three-quarters of the new subscribers. India will supply 7.2 million more IPTV subscribers, up from a very low base at end-2011.

Global IPTV penetration only reached 3.7% of TV households at end-2011, although this was up from 0.6% at end-2007. By end-2017, IPTV penetration will grow to 10.8%. Penetration will remain low in Latin America and Middle East & Africa. However, it will be as high as 14% in the Asia Pacific region by 2017; led by Singapore (43%) and Hong Kong (38%). The UAE (41%) will buck its region’s trend.

Big year for multi-screen TV

July 31, 2012 – Market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from two recent video reports – VoD and Encoder Equipment and Video Subscriber – which tracks equipment sold to telco IPTV, cable video, and satellite video providers, and Set-Top Boxes and Subscribers, which tracks IP, cable, satellite, and hybrid set-top boxes and OTT media servers.

“2012 will be a watershed year for TV Everywhere services, as operators across the globe closely watch Comcast, Cablevision and Time Warner Cable to see if adding these services will have a positive impact on subscriber churn and revenue,” expects Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband access and video at Infonetics Research. “TV Everywhere and other multi-screen video initiatives are fundamentally changing the TV business model, with apps streaming live TV to iPads, and telcos and cable companies offering home automation, security, and video conferencing to subscribers in an effort to make the TV the hub of the digital home.”
