Consumers are ahead of us!

June 21, 2012 by John Moulding

250,000 people watch Sky Sports using Sky Go

Mike Darcey, Chief Operating Officer at BSkyB, has admitted that for the first time in his life at Sky (he joined in 1998), the Pay TV operator has fallen behind what consumers are demanding because of the need to make content available in so many ways, whenever they want it. Speaking at ‘The Future of Entertainment Summit’ in London yesterday, he declared: “We have always felt that we were ahead of the consumer, and we brought things to market early like Sky+ [the PVR]. It was our job to explain to consumers why they needed them. But today customer expectations of what they should be able to do with their content have caught up and run ahead of us and as an industry we are trying to catch up.”

Giving an example, Darcey said Sky customers are asking why they cannot take their content off their Sky+ recorder and take it with them on the train on another device. “We know it is a reasonable question but it is just hard to achieve,” he explained. “There are a lot of technology and rights issues to get right. So we have gone from being ahead to being behind consumers and we all have lots of work to do just to answer the questions they are posing for us today.”

Newtec breaks satellite speed barrier

14 June 2012 -Newtec has ushered in a new era of bandwidth efficiency by breaking the magical 0.5 Gbps two way throughput over a 72 MHz transponder on a Eutelsat satellite.

Testing was performed at Eutelsat’s teleport in Rambouillet during the night in order not to disturb crucial daytime sport transmissions. A significant margin was taken in cloud cover conditions to ensure the tests were relevant for real-life high availability services in broadcast and telecom markets.

June 22, 2012: LG Electronics and TP Vision (which makes Philips-branded smart TV sets in a number of territories) have confirmed the formation of the Smart TV Alliance.

The group’s mission is to create a set of open HTML-based standards so that application developers can make apps that run across smart TV brands.

BT finally blocks Pirate Bay

altJune 22, 2012 – BT has become the UK’s final major Internet service provider to block The Pirate Bay, following a high court order for ISPs to censor the torrent-sharing site.

In April 2012, the British High Court forced six major providers to block access to the website. BT asked for more time to respond to the court order, and evaluate the implications of setting up the blockade. It has now complied with the court order, and BT users with a taste for torrents will be redirected to a notice from the British Phonographic Industry.

India: Digitisation delay is not a good sign

June 22, 2012 – It doesn’t look good. Late on Wednesday the ministry of information and broadcasting extended the June 30 deadline to digitise all TV homes in the four metros. The new deadline is October 31.

“This is the first big step on a slippery slope,” says Uday Shankar, CEO, STAR India and president of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF). “We don’t doubt the commitment of the minister and ministry to bring digitisation. But we have seen that one extension usually provides the grounds for many extensions. It is very disappointing.”

Yogesh Radhakrishnan, managing director and CEO, Media Network and Distribution, echoes that with a rider. “Sure it is disappointing, but three months will not make a difference. The fact is that it is happening,” says he.

“Four to six months doesn’t matter, as long as the process is on,” agrees Sameer Manchanda, chairman, Den Networks.

NBTC demands schedules from TV ops

19/06/2012 – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has tightened its grip on the TV business by ordering all free TV operators and TrueVisions to submit their programme schedules and report any change made to them in the future.

The regulator said the move is in line with Section 34 of the Radio and Television Broadcasting Act.

Airing of a new programme must be approved by the NBTC 15 days in advance. Free TV _ Channels 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and Thai PBS _ must clarify their signal transmissions on all platforms as well. “So far, none of the free TVs or TrueVisions has complied with this rule. They should do it now,” said Col Natee Sukonrat, chairman of the NBTC’s broadcasting committee.

NCC bumps for Taiwan’s Kbro

Jun 21, 2012 – The National Communications Commission (NCC) said yesterday it would ask multiple-service operator Kbro for a briefing on a mechanism it has used to ensure that all channels have equal opportunities to be included in its cable television services.

The decision was made during the commission’s review of Kbro’s application to change its channel lineups in the 14 cable television services it owns. While Kbro’s application for most of the changes was approved, the NCC held out home shopping channels for further discussion.

19-06-2012: The company formerly called China Broadband has changed its name to YOU On Demand, shifting its focus to bring pay-per-view (PPV) and video-on-demand (VOD) to China’s television viewers.

YOU On Demand CEO Shane McMahon changed the thrust of the company when he learned it was licenced to be the first to offer VOD and PPV in China, which has more growth potential than broadband.

The service launched in three million homes last winter and expects to grow into 11 million homes by the end of 2012.
