‘Tata Sky Kids Cinema’ is free of cost for all Tata Sky subscribers featuring a mix of delightful animated and live action features and short-films, most of which have never released in India. Over 150 award winning and highly acclaimed movies will run all year round ranging in language from Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, to English, Japanese, French, German, Russian and many more. GEM to Simulcast ‘I Can Sing in Japanese!’ and ‘Your Home is My Business! Returns’ in Asia

SINGAPORE (May 11, 2017) – GEM hits a high note this month with the premiere of two popular series at the same time as Japan. Viewers across Southeast Asia can look forward to the highly anticipated singing contest ‘I Can Sing in Japanese!’, as well as the sequel to the original hit drama ‘Your Home is My Business! Returns’.

This season, contestants will be assessed by a panel of celebrity judges comprising R&B and pop singer May J; singer-songwriter Tatsuya Ishii; as well as famed musician Tetsuya Komuro, who is widely hailed as one of the most influential figures in the Japanese music industry. ‘I Can Sing in Japanese! Spring 2017’ premieres on GEM at the same time as Japan on May 13 at 6pm (5pm JKT/BKK).

As an added bonus to this season’s premiere of ‘I Can Sing in Japanese!’, GEM will also broadcast a TV special just one hour prior at 5pm (4pm JKT/BKK), which features the shortlisted finalists selected from GEM’s inaugural Southeast Asia auditions held in Singapore. Filipina singing sensation, Krissha Viaje, won the hearts of the judges on the day, and was chosen as a finalist to represent Southeast Asia in Tokyo. Don’t miss the action!

Switching gears to drama, Nippon TV’s original hit series ‘Your Home is My Business!,’ which stars Ms. Keiko Kitagawa, returns for a special episode on Friday, May 26 at 8pm (7pm JKT/BKK) on GEM at the same time as Japan.
Enjoying international acclaim, the series follows the adventures of genius real estate agent Machi Sangenya, who, more often than not, gets tangled up in the personal problems of her clients. The series is set two years after Machi left Teiko Real Estate, when she returns to work for two weeks as a temporary employee with the task of saving the struggling company. Machi closes one deal after another with uniquely colorful clients that include a Chinese man with a passion for hoarding Japanese properties, an elementary school child star who buys a home for his father, and a poverty-stricken single mother.

Viddsee’s first original short film ‘Time’ and other Asian short films to premiere on Lifetime starting 13 May

 

Singapore, 8 May 2017 – Lifetime® Asia (StarHub TV Ch 514) today announced a partnership with Singapore’s homegrown online entertainment platform Viddsee, to curate and broadcast a weekly selection of stories made by local filmmakers.

Lifetime, a global female-focused entertainment brand, will expand its signature Lifetime Original Movies offering by including Viddsee’s bold curation of stories that celebrate the transformative experiences of modern day women, made by award-winning young and upcoming film directors from Asia.

The partnership kicks off with Viddsee’s first original short film, ‘Time’ and other Asia short stories which premieres on 13 May, Saturday, 10:35pm (SIN/HK) as part of a Mother’s Day special on Lifetime, across 15 territories in Asia.

Actor and comedian Adam Devine gave a “beauty” and a “beast” of a performance, kicking off the legendary party with a fire-filled grand opening featuring an all-star cast of cameos including Lil Rel Howery, Millie Bobby Brown, Chrissy Metz, Blake Anderson, Josh Gad, Hugh Jackman, Hailee Steinfeld, Rebel Wilson and DJ Nasty. “Billion’s” star Asia Kate Dillon presented the first award of the night to Emma Watson for the non-gendered Best Actor in a Movie category with Millie Bobby Brown later accepting the first-ever Best Actor in a Show award.

Star and producer Vin Diesel accepted the Generation Award on behalf of the enduring motion-picture franchise Fast & Furious, marking the first time a film franchise was honored instead of an individual actor. Diesel was joined on-stage by his franchise co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster. J Balvin and Pitbull then took the stage with Camila Cabello to perform their steamy hit single, “Hey Ma,” which was featured in the most recent installment The Fate of the Furious.

The first-ever Best Fight the System award was presented by Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Blackish’s Tracee Ellis Ross to Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures. Additional new and timely categories were awarded to “Blackish” for Best American Story, “This Is Us” for Tearjerker, Trevor Noah for Best Host, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for Best Reality Competition and Daniel Kaluuya for Next Generation.

The evening also included performances by Big Sean and Noah Cyrus, as well as exclusive sneak peeks at highly anticipated films IT, Transformers: The Last Knight and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Fox just launched its Fox+ streaming service in Singapore after its debut in the Philippines in March. The service will initially be available to Singtel customers with Starhub to follow soon. A 30-day free trial is also available (through the Android app anyways) for anyone. It looks very slick, but haven’t yet figured out how to cast it to my TV. Pricing can start as low as US$10/month and go up to as high at $18, depending on existing plan and introductory offer. This compares to US $7.75/month in the Philippines. 11,000+ hours of programming with live sports makes this a very exciting and ambitious offering. Looking forward to diving into it…after I punch out for the day.

Thailand’s NBTC announced that it would set up a subcommittee to implement regulation of OTT operators. One suspects this may have more to do with what one Thai newspaper called the trend toward “tightening regulation of all Thai Media.”  The Bangkok Post said it is all about “out of control” OTT services. And there is certainly a control orientation in the Thai government these days.

Meanwhile, plans to curb journalists and news outlets across the kingdom edged a little closer this week as the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) voted to endorse the “media reform bill”, which would impose restrictions on TV News channels and print media journalists. According to The Nation, concerns have been raised by media professionals, consumer groups and overseas watchdogs while the newspaper openly denounced the authoritarian law, which it says takes Thailand back decades.

During APOS last week, Mark Britt of iflix made the point (a couple times) that his biggest competition is piracy…with recent reports saying Singapore is in the top 10. Bloomberg has an article this week that states that “Subscription-based business models in content distribution is making piracy pointless” and refers the recent Orange is the New Black fifth season leak. This fantastic chart of the “Comeback” of the music industry is promising and could show us what’s in store for the video business under subscription models. Fox+’s recent launch, combined with other services, will help pave the way.

Elsewhere, in Australia, another blow against a different sort or piracy, with the Federal Court ordering ISPs to shut off access to the website KickassTorrents. It’s not the first torrent site to be blocked in Oz (several others were blocked late last year); here’s hoping it’s not the last!

Investment in digital and online advertising is set to exceed television in two Asian markets, Hong Kong and Taiwan, in 2017. According to WPP media company GroupM’s annual Interaction Report, TV still remains king across Asian markets, with digital only reigning supreme in China. The report, which examined digital advertising growth forecasts in 46 markets, said TV still accounted for the majority of adspend 2016 at 42 per cent.

India’s TAM service provider BARC has announced that from July it will no longer monitor analogue homes across most of the country, with the exception of those homes in the state of Tamil Nadu, which has been slower to force the pace of change compared to other regions. Currently vast swathes of homes across India are thought to still be able to receive analogue signals and the move to drop reporting will push operators and channels to focus on switching to digital after the MIB ordered the switch off of analogue signals in March. BARC have said that their sample homes is also set to increase from 20,000 to 30,000, with a government mandate to increase the number to 50,000 by the year 2020.

Opposite trends on copyright: The EU Court of Justice rendered a very interesting advisory opinion, which may make it possible to close down more ISD retail operations. At the same time, across the Atlantic in Mexico, the Supreme court decided no blocking action against pirate websites could be taken, as they might also host some legitimate content.

This week Hulu’s CEO Mike Hopkins announced the launch of Hulu’s brand new live TV streaming beta service in the US, along with what it describes as its ground-breaking new user experience with the streaming-plus-live combination that Hulu is hoping will set it apart from its competitors Viewers. who subscribe to the beta plan can enjoy live and on demand programming from more than 50 popular sports, news, entertainment and kids’ channels as well as the streaming library all for just shy of US$40. The rather imaginative name for the service is Hulu With Live TV. It says what it does on the box, so can’t fault them there.
