PCCW Global and Ideal Systems collaborated for the world’s first live 360 virtual reality broadcast of the 2017 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens

HKT (SEHK: 6823) – HONG KONG, April 20, 2017 – PCCW Global, the international operating division of HKT, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications service provider, and Ideal Systems, Asia’s largest broadcast and media systems integrator, have successfully delivered the world’s first live 360° and 3D multi-camera coverage of the 2017 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens with the support of Now TV, the official host broadcaster of the event, providing viewers with a totally immersive virtual reality (VR) viewing experience.
PCCW Global’s expertise in live mega event management and new media technology delivery, together with Ideal Systems’ broadcast solutions and virtual reality expertise, enabled the team to deliver this complex solution in less than six weeks from project initiation.
The collaboration involved Ideal Systems delivering the content acquisition using a number of pitch-side Nokia OZO 360° cameras*. These cameras provided a UHD IP signal which was delivered over HKT fiber to Nokia servers in the control room, to facilitate live stitching from each of the cameras’ eight 2K lenses to create multiple stitched 3D UHD streams. These 360° audio and video streams were switched and passed through to the Harmonic Electra VS encoders for delivery to the PCCW Global media delivery network. Six streams were routed from the stadium for live distribution by Now TV to consumers’ mobile devices, PCs and VR headsets, including Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, Zeiss VR One Plus and Google Cardboard via YouTube 360.
The challenges of real-time live VR streaming compared to traditional TV revolve around the complexity of dealing with data rates which are significantly larger and more demanding on the delivery networks – with close to 6 Gbps of uncompressed video coming from each OZO Live Server. By way of comparison, reports from Broadband Forum suggest that even basic VR video requires 17 times the bandwidth of normal HD video.
From Ideal Systems’ side, the project involved its live production teams for the on-site set up and live “stitching and switching” production. It also involved Ideal Systems’ software development department, which developed and published the downloadable apps utilizing the Nokia OZO API for the VR headsets and provided onsite network security and publishing platforms.
Mr. Mike van den Bergh, Chief Marketing Officer of PCCW Global, said, “This world’s first delivery of a complete source-to-screen solution for immersive 360 VR viewing was one of the most exciting projects our team has been involved in, because while it truly showcased our innovation and media delivery capabilities, it also tested our abilities fully, leveraging as it did both our extensive experience in delivering mega sports events, and our ability to successfully put such a complex solution together in a very short space of time.”

Mr. Jim Butler, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Systems Group, said, “We are very excited to be on the bleeding edge of this next wave of broadcast innovation and are honored to have been chosen as the 360 VR partner by PCCW Global. We had no play book to go by and are writing the rules as we go. It is a bit daunting to be first, especially with an event of this magnitude and duration. We are delighted that it has been such a successful project for us and PCCW Global and ultimately Now TV’s viewers.”

Hotstar shatters another ceiling: 100 million downloads on Play Store

First “Made in India” platform to cross the line, races to the milestone in 2 years

Mumbai, 19 April 2017: Over the last 2 years, Hotstar has been consistently blazing the trail on setting new benchmarks for a consumer Internet company. From being the fastest growing platform in the world to introducing technological innovations in streaming, Hotstar has been the pioneer in opening up the premium video category in India.

This week, Hotstar shattered yet another ceiling. It became the first local service to cross 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store. On the Play Store downloads chart, the online video platform has raced far ahead of many other consumer Internet companies in India, including e-commerce services like Amazon India and Flipkart, taxi ride services like Ola, payment apps like Paytm, and even news services like Times of India, NDTV and Dailyhunt. Almost all of Hotstar’s downloads have come from India. The service reached this milestone within just 2 years of its launch in 2015.

Across the Play Store, App Store and other Android app stores cumulatively, Hotstar has crossed more than 200 million downloads since launch.

The service also announced recently that it has emerged as the primary screen for VIVO IPL 2017 in India’s top cities, those with more than a million in population. In a newspaper announcement last week, Hotstar revealed massive growth in viewership over the previous year, including a 5 times increase in watch time and a 12 times increase in concurrent viewership on the platform.

About Hotstar:

Hotstar is India’s largest premium streaming platform with more than 100,000 hours of drama and movies in 8 languages, and coverage of every major global sporting event. Launched in February 2015, it has attracted followers on the back of a highly evolved video streaming technology and high attention to quality of experience across devices and platforms.

Soon after its launch, Hotstar become one of the fastest adopted new apps anywhere in the world. Hotstar offers most of its content free of cost and recently introduced a pay wall that provides some of the most popular international TV series and films for a monthly subscription fee of Rs. 199.

Hotstar is also available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for mobile and tablet applications and can also be accessed at www.hotstar.com

Great Big Story Takes a Walk Through South Korea’s Street Style in New Series With Korean Air

The musicians, artists and chefs behind the sounds, smells and energy of the streets of South Korean cities are coming to Great Big Story in a new video series ‘Soul of the Street’.

Starting this week, ‘Soul of the Street’ unlocks the Seoul that few outside of the city have truly experienced, and ventures away from the capital to discover street culture in other South Korean cities. The first video published today highlights South Korean B-Boy crew Jinjo, which brings to life the incredible art of breakdancing and how two brothers find inspiration from outside the hip-hop genre for their amazing aerial moves.

The nine-part editorial series is accompanied by a branded content partnership established by CNN International Commercial (CNNIC) with Korean Air. The campaign, targeted to audiences in North America and Asia, is designed to inspire Great Big Story’s young, affluent and culturally-aware audiences about what Korea offers adventurous and curious travelers.

As well as Korean Air branding appearing alongside the editorial videos, there will be two branded content films from CNNIC’s branded content studio Create. These films will tell two stories with Korean Air at their heart – a piece about Je-dong Farm, where Korean Air grows food for its inflight meals, and a love story between two artists in Seoul and New York, separated by geography but connected by Korean Air.

The editorial and branded content will feature on Great Big Story’s app and website, as well as across its social channels, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, reaching over 10 million multi-platform followers. A playlist will be created as more videos go live in the coming months.

“Great Big Story’s camera-toting, curiosity-driven storytellers have uncovered some of the most incredible people, places and cultures from around the world,” said Uyen Tieu, General Manager, Great Big Story. “We’re excited to partner with Korean Air through a series that immerses viewers in the heart of Korea’s street culture, while inspiring prospective travelers through amazing and thought-provoking stories.”

“Korean Air is a long-standing partner of CNN’s, and we are delighted to build on this relationship to take the Korean Air brand into new territory and reach different audiences through Great Big Story,” said Sunita Rajan, SVP, Advertising Sales, APAC, CNN International Commercial. “The power of this campaign lies in rich storytelling, clever targeting and the engagement that Great Big Story has with its audience. I am certain that anyone who watches ‘Soul of the Street’ will be enticed to book a flight and experience South Korea for themselves.”

Emily Cho, Senior Vice President, Korean Air said “We are delighted to partner with CNN to launch Korean Air’s content campaign through a creative platform like Great Big Story. ‘Soul of the Street’ captures unique stories from Korea that we hope will enchant and engage our global travelers. We at Korean Air believe in excellence in flight and are dedicated to bring Korea to the forefront as a leading travel destination, which is perfectly positioned by this partnership.”

India’s popular youth show, Dr. Subhash Chandra (DSC) Show in a ‘new avatar’

DSC Show Logo

  • The fresh episodes to showcase the inspiring stories of the nation’s unsung heroes
  • Ravi Kalra, Founder of Earth Saviours Foundation and Saachi Roy, India’s youngest woman to scale Mt. Everest grace the first episode held at Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management, Rohini in New Delhi

New Delhi, April 18, 2017: After a successful initial run, India’s popular motivational youth show, Dr. Subhash Chandra (DSC) Show returns with a fresh look and format. Evolving from a straight-forward chat show, the new episodes will highlight inspirational stories of people from different backgrounds. While it was Dr. Chandra who vehemently tried to motivate and change many lives in the earlier format, going ahead the DSC Show will introduce audiences to the stories of India’s unsung heroes who overcame hurdles in their lives through courage and determination.

The first episode was held today at Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management, Rohini in New Delhi during which Dr. Subhash Chandra, MP, Rajya Sabha & Chairman, Essel Group & ZEE shared his insights on the topic ‘Who Am I?”. The special guests for this episode were Ravi Kalra, Founder of Earth Saviours Foundation and popularly known as the ‘No Honking Man of India’ and Saachi Roy, India’s youngest woman to have been selected for an expedition to Mount Everest by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and also the first from the country to reach Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak.

Sharing his views on the topic ‘Who Am I?’, Dr. Chandra said, “As we journey through life, we tend to give ourselves different identities such as son, daughter, student or teacher. But we are a son or daughter because we have parents, students because we are studying in a school or college, and teachers because we are imparting knowledge to others. Thus everything that we believe in dependent on something else and is not our true identity. The only thing which is independent of everything else is our ‘Inner Consciousness’ which is the sensation of being alive and aware.”

Elaborating further, Dr. Chandra said, “While our thoughts, emotions and environment change, this Inner Consciousness never changes. By teaching ourselves to be aware of and immersed in this consciousness, we can calm our mind and slow our flow of thoughts, thus utilizing its power more effectively. As we harness this power, we will also experience freedom from anxiety and worry, inner strength, peace of mind and happiness.”

The big news this week in enforcement against illicit streaming devices (ISDs) is that two major e-commerce platforms have implemented programs to weed out sales of blatantly infringing devices from their user postings.  Amazon, which has been a major route for ISDs shipping to Europe and America, added a paragraph on streaming media to their seller policies, and said “Products offered for sale on Amazon should not promote, suggest the facilitation of, or actively enable the infringement of or unauthorised access to digital media or other protected content.”  There was no big announcement, but the piracy press certainly noted.   With respect to box sales on Asian platforms, we also learned this week that Alibaba says it is implementing a parallel policy.  I couldn’t find any public discussion of this in the press (yet), but member company Irdeto confirms they’ve now seen a very substantial reduction in numbers of blatantly infringing boxes on the Alibaba and Aliexpress platforms.  All of that is great news…..but we do have to temper our joyful reaction just a bit – there are still plenty of sales of empty boxes on the e-commerce sites.  (Those are streaming boxes that haven’t yet been loaded with the piracy software apps.)

I ONLY listen to “people familiar with the matter” and especially so with rumors and conjecture. This week they tell us that Comcast Is Planning a Netflix Rival Using NBC Shows. The service could include programs from the NBC broadcast network as well as Comcast cable channels Bravo, SyFy and USA with a launch anywhere in the next 12-18 months. Sorry, not a lot of hard facts here folks. Though with comedy streaming service, Seeso, and a sports package with cycling and rugby, called NBC Sports Gold, more VOD services in the future seem consistent.

Chinese cable television companies have cut off access to South Korean programming in a move by Beijing to punish Seoul for installing a missile defense system aimed at North Korea, but which China says threatens its own security. As well as boycotts of South Korean goods and services that have spread across China in recent weeks, authorities have blocked access in China to South Korean television channels. In cities like Yanji and Jilin which have large ethnic Korean populations, people are now installing satellite antennas to receive the South Korean channels. While drama and other entertainment shows are popular with Chinese viewers the channels also carry news programmes.

During the past weekend, PCCW-owned operator Now TV was able to provide live coverage of the Hong Kong Sevens through virtual reality, jointly with NETVIGATOR. Now TV is always trying to adopt new video technology to improve the viewing experience for their customers says Janice Lee, managing director of PCCW Media Group. With the addition of VOD, recording functions, and much more, Now has offered enhanced convenience for customers to view the event.

My favorite streaming stories of the week.  “Let’s not pretend that this is a consumer-wins-all race to the top — it’s a way for struggling media businesses to pivot their revenue strategies, for agitators to disrupt existing verticals and it’s a way for large media players to lock-in their supremacy for the long-term. And on the same theme, As The Digital Streams Become A Gushing River, Who Stays Afloat? For those of you that have “run through all of Netflix’s programming” you can find out Where the Best Television Online is Hiding. And to top it off, The Billion-Dollar Race for Streaming Supremacy, Amazon Prime to spend $4.5 billion on video content this year…Netflix to spend $6 billion.

The campaign supports Discovery’s All Screen strategy to share premium content with consumers through TV, Social, Digital and Virtual Reality

Bear Grylls filmed using 360 video technology for the first time – immersing consumers in his adventures like never before

Bear Grylls

Singapore, 17 April 2017 – Discovery Communications has brought to life a partnership between Bear Grylls, the television adventurer, and Samsung to promote the new Samsung Gear S3Bear, famous for adrenaline-fuelled television shows, including Discovery Channel’s Man Vs. Wild, will leverage cutting-edge video technology, fully immersing fans across the world in his latest escapades.

The collaboration – specially targeted for the U.S and Europe, Middle East and Africa markets – comprises a series of short form videos as well as a television advertisement, where Bear showcases key capabilities of the Samsung Gear S3 in a variety of challenging survival scenarios, including the barometer function to predict weather conditions; the calorie consumption and burning application to maintain energy levels; and the altimeter to record altitude whilst scaling a mountain. All the while, he shares his signature survival tips to help any explorer on their adventures beyond the reach of civilisation.

So many of us have sat on the edge of our seats as Bear scales mountains, throws himself out of planes and jumps into icy waters; and watched with intrigue as he tucks into creepy crawlies in some of the world’s most remote places, very often with the world’s best known people. Now, anyone can get closer to the action, through this premium content that highlights the extensive technological capabilities of the Samsung Gear S3.

Bear stated that he’s “very proud to partner with both Discovery and Samsung to bring you the most advanced adventure watch on the market. I have used the Gear S3 in some of the toughest terrains out there and it always delivers when I need it.”

Viviane Paxinos, Vice President, Media and Advertising Partnerships – Discovery Networks International said, “Discovery is best in class for creating innovative content and immersive viewer experiences and our latest 360 video technology will provide a unique platform for Bear to showcase his adventures like never before. We’re always excited to work with other companies that are at the cutting edge of technology to showcase our storytelling and their brands.”

The campaign launched on 27 March and is accessible across platforms including linear such as Discovery Channel, as well as its social, digital and virtual reality applications, reaching new and younger audiences across all screens.

Publicis Media Sport and Entertainment negotiated the partnership with Bear Grylls for Samsung, whilst Starcom led the media negotiations with Discovery.
