13 April, 2017, HONG KONG – FOX Networks Group (FNG) Asia has named media industry veteran Mike Rich as Executive Vice President, Advertising Sales & Content Partnerships for Asia Pacific and the Middle East.  The company also announced that Simeon Dawes, who has been keen to focus full-time on his other business interest, will leave the group by the end of April.

In this enhanced role, Rich will lead teams across the region to identify new revenue streams for FNG Asia and its content partners, and to further strengthen FNG’s position as a leader in advertising innovation. He will report to Zubin Gandevia.

Rich’s appointment follows the earlier hiring of Italo Zanzi as Executive Vice President and Managing Director for FOX Sports as the group has been working to strengthen its sports, advertising sales and content creation teams across the region.

Commenting on the changes, Zubin Gandeva, President of FOX Network Groups Asia, said, “With an incredible portfolio of channel brands and the world’s greatest television programming, FOX has a unique opportunity to leverage its assets to expand and develop existing and new revenue streams in Asia. Simeon has been a key figure in building the FOX business in Asia and I want to thank him for everything he has done for us and wish him all the best.  At the same time we are delighted that Mike is joining us to contribute his wealth of experience with brands, agencies and content to help us continue delivering innovative solutions and ignite our full commercial potential.”

FOX and I have ambitious plans in the content creation and digital distribution arenas, and I could not be happier to join such a forward-thinking global media business.”

Simeon Dawes added, “The time is right for me to focus on my other business interest as I’m able to leave FOX knowing that with Mike and Italo the right people are in place.  For the past seven years I have also had an interest in building a health and nutrition distribution business and now I can turn my full attention to leading and growing that, something I’ve been keen to do for some time.”

Android Poised to Play a Pivotal Role in the Future of TV Distribution

New global survey by Irdeto finds that 72% of video service providers have Android on their technology roadmap with only 54% willing to pay a premium for the technology

AMSTERDAM – 11 April 2017 – Irdeto, the world leader in digital platform security, and Ovum have released results from a new global survey indicating that a majority of video service providers have either Android TV or Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on their technology roadmaps. Conducted in February 2017, Is Android the future of the set-top box? found that 72% of respondents are considering Android implementations as a part of their set-top box (STB) strategies. In addition, 50% of respondents see Android as being important for their goals within the next five years. The 300 TV industry professionals surveyed also identified a variety of benefits they perceive Android TV to offer, including the availability of new features and services, faster time-to-market, an attractive user interface and cost efficiencies. However, while a majority of respondents indicated a commitment to Android, only 54% of video service providers are willing to pay more for Android chipsets than traditional chipsets with embedded middleware.

Features, specifically the ability for users to download additional apps, are the driving force leading Android implementations. Video service providers with more than one million subscribers (43%) and those with less than one million subscribers (34%) both said that this was the number one driver for adoption. However, despite service providers’ confidence in the benefits of Android TV, there remain significant concerns around piracy and cyberthreats. By allowing easy installations of other applications onto the STB, 43% of respondents believe there will be an increased attack surface, while 41% are concerned that their subscribers could install apps for illegal streaming.

“Video service providers are feeling pressure to continue to innovate their offerings to satisfy consumer demand for an optimal user experience,” said Frank Poppelsdorf, Director of Product Management, Irdeto. “These results indicate that Android TV is not only on pace to play a critical role in the future of TV distribution, but are essential for the industry to meet growing consumer demand for new and innovative services. However, the open nature of the technology brings up several security concerns, especially in regard to piracy. As the industry continues to shift toward more open platforms for the set-top box, it will be critical for video service providers to implement a robust 360-degree security approach to ensure their premium content is protected while optimizing flexibility and time to market.”

While many expect Android to dominate the TV landscape in the near future, the survey revealed that more education on the differences between Android platforms may be needed. Only 52% of those surveyed understand the differences between Android TV and AOSP.

“Education on Android platforms is critical for video service providers to understand the capabilities, benefits and drawbacks of each technology in order to make the best strategic decision concerning their technology roadmap,” said Ed Barton, Practice Leader, TV, Ovum. “These types of insights identified in our survey with Irdeto are key to help pay TV operators, broadcasters and OTT streaming providers better anticipate the opportunities and challenges ahead. We were pleased to work with Irdeto on this survey of C-Level executives as well as professionals across multiple disciplines to identify Android strategies that will shape the pay TV market in the years ahead”

As platforms like Android TV become the new norm in the TV landscape, it will be important for operators to employ a holistic, 360-degree security approach to secure these next-generation devices. Stofa, Denmark’s most innovative supplier of cable TV and broadband internet services, recently selected Irdeto Cloaked CA to securely deliver content through its upcoming new Android set-top box (STB). Not only will subscribers have the full range of Stofa services on the STB, they will also have direct access to the Google Play app store and to streaming services such as YouTube. Stofa intends to revolutionize the user experience with its new Android STB and with Irdeto’s latest renewable and cardless software security, any form of content delivered to customers will be robustly protected.

Methodology

The survey was commissioned by Irdeto and conducted in February 2017 by Ovum. 301 TV industry professionals spread across six regional groupings, including APAC, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Latin America, Middle East & Africa and North America participated in the survey. All respondent companies provide video services as part of their business and the service provider types were Internet service providers, OTT video providers, pay TV operators (cable, DTT and satellite) and telecoms providers. The survey targeted an informed audience with a representative proportion of C-level respondents alongside technology, content, marketing and network security.

Premier League and Irdeto Collaborate with Law Enforcement Agencies to Shut Down One of the Largest IPTV Piracy Businesses in Europe

Spanish National Police, Europol, Eurojust and other authorities team up on global anti-piracy investigation leading to raid of 12 locations in Spain and Bulgaria

AMSTERDAM , 11 April 2017 – The Spanish National Police and Europol have publicly announced the successful raid of one of the largest European illegal IPTV streaming businesses. In a collaborative operation with Europol, Eurojust, Spanish specialized computer crimes prosecutors, Premier League and Irdeto, 12 locations were raided in Spain and Bulgaria. Dubbed “Operation Casper,” eight individuals were arrested for the illegal distribution of 1,000 pay TV channels across two Internet Service Providers (ISPs) through the use of IPTV technology. The servers used to provide illegal access to the channels were shut down and numerous documents incriminating the individuals under investigation were also confiscated. [Click here to watch Police video of what was found at the scene].

The investigation was initiated by the Premier League as part of a global effort to combat illegal online redistribution of its live broadcasts. Irdeto identified a Danish citizen residing in Spain who owned an ISP in Málaga used to illegally broadcast encrypted TV signals to thousands of consumers and businesses across Europe. It was discovered that this individual was the leader of a criminal organization that was able to provide a high-quality pirate service rivaling offerings from legal operators. Operation Casper also uncovered another illegal organization located in Silistra, Bulgaria that was operated by the same criminal network who had another internet provider in that location covering different European countries. Both of the ISPs identified were legally established, performing legal activities while also exploiting their capacities to provide illegal services.

“These actions are just one part of the largest anti-piracy campaign the Premier League has conducted to protect its copyright,” said Kevin Plumb, Director of Legal Services, Premier League. “The raids in Spain and Bulgaria by the Spanish Police and law enforcement agencies are a clear indication that IPTV piracy will not be tolerated. Our model, like other sports and creative industries, is predicated on the ability to market and sell rights and protect our intellectual property.  It is because of this that clubs can invest in and develop talented players, build world class stadiums, and support young people in schools and communities across the country.”

Engaged by the Premier League for piracy detection and investigative services, Irdeto’s team of experts worked closely with the Premier League, Spanish National Police and law enforcement agencies to gather information and evidence leading to the raid. This information resulted in the 12 simultaneous raids in Spain and Bulgaria, proving that both ISPs were illegally distributing pirated content. The disbanded criminal organization also controlled three other entities that provided the content to its customers.

“The efforts of the Spanish Police and law enforcement to dismantle pirate organizations like this is critical in the fight against IPTV piracy,” said Mark Mulready, Senior Director, Cyber Services & Investigations at Irdeto. “We continue to support our customers, partners and law enforcement agencies to identify large-scale cross-border pirate networks and help combat piracy. By detecting, analyzing, investigating and countering piracy, our collaborative efforts send a message to the pirate community that they will be found and brought to justice.”

Oprah Winfrey, Rose Byrne, Renée Elise Goldsberry Star in HBO Original Film the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Debuting April 23 Only on HBO GO, HBO on Demand & HBO

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Publicity images

SINGAPORE, APRIL 11, 2017 – In 1951, a vibrant African-American woman was dying of cervical cancer at age 31. Under the bright lights of an operating room, surgeons harvested cells from her tumor that would prove to be astonishingly immortal and would change the face of medicine forever. Yet she, and any recognition of her involuntary donation, would long remain unknown. HBO Original Film THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS premieres same time as the U.S. on Sunday April 23 at 8am (SIN) on HBO with a same day primetime encore at 10:50pm (SIN). Also available on HBO On Demand and HBO GO.

The story is told through the eyes of Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah Lacks (Oprah Winfrey) who is aided by journalist, Rebecca Skloot (Rose Byrne). Deborah sets out to learn about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Henrietta’s (Renée Elise Goldsberry) cancerous cells led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, creating a medical revolution that changed countless lives. It’s a true story of medical arrogance and triumph, race, poverty and deep friendship between the unlikeliest of people.

The cast of THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS includes: Oprah Winfrey (as Deborah Lacks), Rose Byrne (as Rebecca Skloot), Renée Elise Goldsberry (as Henrietta Lacks), Reg E. Cathey (as Zakariyya), Rocky Carroll (as Sonny Lacks), Courtney B. Vance (as Sir Lord Keenan Kester Cofield), Ruben Santiago-Hudson (as Dr. Pattillo) and Leslie Uggams (as Sadie). Directed by George C. Wolfe from a screenplay by Peter Landesman and Alexander Woo and Wolfe, the film is based on the book by Rebecca Skloot. Alan Ball, Peter Macdissi, Oprah Winfrey, Carla Gardini and Lydia Dean Pilcher executive produce; Rebecca Skloot co-executive produces. Additional cast includes Reed Birney, Adriane Lenox, Roger Robinson and John Douglas Thomas.

ABOUT THE STORY

Henrietta Lacks grew up as a tobacco farmer from Virginia and, in 1951, was a married mother of five when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 31. Under treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, tissue from her malignant tumor was removed without her knowledge or that of her family, as was standard practice of the day. Her tissue was given to Dr. George Gey, who, at Johns Hopkins, had been trying for nearly 30 years to grow an immortal cell line. Scientists around the world had been making similar efforts with cell lines for decades for human testing that was impossible to do on living human beings.

Up until this time, no one was able to grow human cells in the culture of a petri dish. However, Lacks’ cells, multiplying at a feverish pace and accelerating the deadly cancer inside her body, continued to grow, inexplicably – one might say, miraculously – and multiply outside her body in laboratory conditions. What started as a doctor’s curiosity led to the birth of the biomedical industry and the use of what was known as HeLa cells in tens of thousands of research studies over the years. From the development of drugs for polio, leukemia, influenza and Parkinson’s disease, to cloning and gene mapping, to their inclusion in the first space missions to study the impact of zero gravity on human cells, Lacks’ cells have been bought and sold by the billions and continue to exist and multiply today.

Science journalist Rebecca Skloot spent ten years researching the story behind the HeLa cells, trying to bring Lacks’ story to light. Her 2010 New York Times bestseller, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” not only explains the scientific background of Lacks’ story, but follows her efforts to win the trust of the Lacks family and join Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah, as they set out to discover the woman whose silent contribution changed the world.

ABOUT THE FILM

Multiple Tony Award winner, DGA winner and Emmy® nominee George C. Wolfe brings the book to the screen, based on an adaptation of the story.

“The book is massive,” explains Wolfe. “Massive emotionally, intellectually; it’s a science book and it’s an intimate book about families and race in America and economics and power. All these things are juggled in fascinating and interesting ways.”

Executive producer and star Oprah Winfrey became intrigued by the book before it was even published. Aware of the competitive bidding for the film rights while it was still in galley form, she called Rebecca Skloot to express her recognition of and appreciation for the ten years’ worth of determination it took for the young writer to get Henrietta Lacks’ story told.

Says Winfrey, “Had she not had the conviction to stay with the story, we still wouldn’t know about Henrietta; the world would not know about her story. Rebecca was able to put it within a context that the world could receive and understand, and now, we’ve taken it to the next level.”

Originally, Winfrey did not see herself participating in the project as an actor, because she couldn’t fully relate to the character of Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah. That changed when director Wolfe took a hand to the script.

For the screenplay, Wolfe decided to focus on Deborah Lacks’ determined quest to revisit her mother’s past, having lost her at age two, as well as her relationship with Rebecca Skloot, the eager young journalist who instigated her search.

Says Wolfe, “The story is about loss and identity, the power of knowing your own story and how it manifests itself inside of you. It’s about the desire to know so that you can be a more complete human being.”

“It wasn’t until I saw George’s breakdown of the script in such a way that I understood it was actually about a daughter in search of her mother,” explains Winfrey. “It’s about a daughter who is, really, in search of her mother’s love and connection in order to validate, verify and affirm for herself that she was loved. Knowing that part of the story is what allowed me to take it on.”

Several members of the Lacks family served as consultants on the film, including Henrietta Lacks’ children, Zakariyya Bari Abdul Rahman and David Lacks, Jr., and grandchildren, Jeri Lacks Whye, Alfred Carter, Jr. and La Tonya Carter.

THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS was filmed in and around Atlanta and in Baltimore, including an entrance to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the real-life Henrietta Lacks entered and touched the foot of the huge religious statue in its atrium 65 years before.

The film’s talented crew includes: costume designer Paul Tazewell, casting director Cindy Tolan, music composer Branford Marsalis, editor Aaron Yanes, production designer Caroline Hanania and director of photography Sofian El Fani.

Written by Rebecca Skloot, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly six years and was the 2011 winner of the National Academies Communication Award for creative work that helps the public understanding of topics in science, engineering or medicine. Originally published by Crown Publishing in 2010, it has been translated into more than 25 foreign-language editions, has been added as an educational tool to school curriculums, and will be reissued in April in conjunction with the debut of the HBO Films drama.

Youtube TV launched in the U.S. this week. From previous reports about the service I wasn’t too excited though I have significantly warmed to it because of the functionality of the app.  The service provides linear channels but with unlimited DVR of favourited shows which essentially turns this into a VOD platform….with ads. And the ability to easily cast to any TV, while turning the phone/tablet into a remote control with picture-in-picture, ensures that one can get a high-end viewing experience anywhere, anytime. Definitely something to watch, especially if they start rolling out internationally and/or use this as a platform for third party internet TV providers.

Japan’s e-commerce giant Rakuten has announced it plans to integrate its online film and series streaming operations in Europe (Wuaki), US (Viki) and Japan (Showtime). The group say that this is the next step in its strategy following the upcoming change of Wuaki.tv to  Rakuten.tv in the coming few months. Showtime and Viki will also be rebranded to Rakuten.tv, with all three operations being coordinated out of Barcelona. The rebrand of Wuaki in Europe coincides with the start of a global sponsorship agreement between Rakuten and FC Barcelona announced last November for the next four seasons, worth around €60 million a season.

Blocking of flagrant piracy websites continues to progress in Europe.   An Irish court ordered that country’s first blocks (against three well-known pirate sites), leading the Irish film industry to praise the judgement. In Italy, the regulator orders blocking (not the courts), but a Rome court blessed the process, and the country’s record industry called the decision “a big win.”
