India: Digitisation and Beyond

Digitisation and Beyond

Hong Kong (8 March 2012) – Despite a nearly US$7 billion multichannel TV market, only 60% of India’s vast population owns a television. The CASBAA India Forum 2012: Beyond Digital, staged on 20 March 2012 at the Shangri-La Hotel, New Delhi, will examine important issues affecting multichannel TV in India.

The government mandate to digitise India’s fragmented cable TV networks should provide a boost for the economy and increase consumer choice, competition, broadcast revenues, cable and direct to home (DTH) subscriptions – and investment. But with the deadline for the digitisation of cable TV systems in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai just months away, how will India cope with the transition from analogue to digital?

“Recognising the capacity for massive growth tempered by regulatory and logistical challenges, CASBAA continues to focus its attention on the multichannel TV industry in India,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO, CASBAA.

Topics covered at the Forum will range from the impending digitisation deadline to bandwidth supply, India’s regulatory environment, content creation and advertising opportunities.

A roster of influential global and domestic speakers will provide insights into the future of multichannel TV in India through thought-provoking keynotes and panel discussions including senior officials from the Indian government, Uday K. Varma (Secretary, MIB), JS Sarma (Chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and Supriya Sahu (Joint Secretary (Broadcast & Policy), MIB).

Among other confirmed participants at this year’s Forum are Sanjay Behl (CEO – DTH & IPTV and Group Head – Brand & Marketing, Reliance Communications), Paul Brown-Kenyon (CEO, MEASAT), Rajiv Khattar (General Secretary, DTH Association of India), Sunil Lulla (Treasurer, IBF; MD & CEO, Times TV Network), Ashok Mansukhani (President, MSO Alliance), Deepak Mathur (SVP, Sales, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, SES), Harit Nagpal (MD & CEO, Tata Sky), Anil Prakash (General Secretary, IPTV India Forum), Narayan Rao (President, News Broadcasters Association; Exec Vice Chairperson, NDTV), Vikram Sakhuja (CEO, GroupM South Asia), Roop Sharma (COFI), Sadanand Shetty (VP & Sr. Fund Manager, Taurus Asset Management Co. Ltd.) and RC Venkateish (CEO, Dish TV).

The CASBAA India Forum 2012 is generously supported by Forum Partner STAR India and sponsors ABS, AsiaSat, Eutelsat, MEASAT and SES.

Al Jazeera English Wins RTS Award

al-jazeera
Al Jazeera English Named News Channel of the Year at RTS Awards

  • Global news channel wins the prestigious award ahead of BBC News and Sky News only five years since its launch.
  • Al Jazeera English’s ground-breaking social media programme, The Stream, also wins the Innovative News Award.

London, UK | 22 February, 2012 – Al Jazeera English was today named News Channel of the Year at this year’s Royal Television Society Awards, fending off competition from Sky News and BBC News.

The channel, which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, received praise for its outstanding contribution to journalism, specifically its frontline coverage of landmark events including the Arab Awakening, the Tahrir Square protests and being the first on the scene to report the death of former Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi.

“This is excellent news – and a tribute to the outstanding work of our dedicated staff who have helped to make Al Jazeera English one of the world’s leading global news broadcasters ,” Managing Director of Al Jazeera English, Al Anstey, said.

“Al Jazeera English has had the most incredible year: a year where people took to the streets in protest, the economic crisis unfolded across Europe, and the world witnessed the devastating impact of the tsunami in Japan. Al Jazeera English was there to capture every moment, and it is a great privilege for our reporters and bureaus across the world to receive this award in recognition of our hard work. We look forward to continue providing in-depth, award-winning coverage as Al Jazeera English grows in reach and popularity across the world.”

Al Jazeera English’s social media programme, The Stream, also won the Innovative News Award for its in-depth analysis of the struggle between government loyalists and opposition supporters in Bahrain.

The programme, which relies heavily on social media platforms and Skype interviews for its content, brought the ongoing protests in Bahrain to the forefront and featured an intense Skype debate between Suhail Algosaibi, a government loyalist, and Zainab al-Khawajah, a Bahraini activist.

“Programmes like The Stream continue to raise the bar in news reporting,” Paul Eedle, Director of Programmes at Al Jazeera English, said. “The Stream allowed people to share their experiences and air their views in the midst of government crackdowns across the Middle East. The Stream was created for this very purpose, because we acknowledged the power of social media and citizen journalism and wanted to harness it. We share this award with everyone that has contributed to the show and its success.”

The prestigious RTS award follows a number of awards the channel received last year. Amongst these was the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for the documentary “Haiti: Six Months On” on Al Jazeera English’s flagship U.S. current affairs show Fault Lines. The channel also received the Columbia Journalism Award – the award given annually by Columbia University – in recognition of Al Jazeera English’s overall depth and quality of its coverage of the ongoing developments in the Middle East.

Studios want to put films, TV on USB sticks

March 5, 2012 – Momentum behind digital content initiatives for home entertainment continues to pick up steam. The latest development is a digital rights management (DRM) scheme by content owners to put movies and TV shows on USB sticks and other standard storage devices.

The idea is to give consumers an easier and faster way to organise, store and move their high-definition digital movies and TV shows across screens and endpoints. And, the content will be backed up via the UltraViolet industry standard for cloud access.

Dubbed ‘Project Phenix,’ the intiative is backed by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, SanDisk and Western Digital as part of the newly formed Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA), a coalition that will create and licence DRM solutions to secure copyrighted content on local and portable hard drives, and flash memory products like USB flash drives, SD cards and solid state disk drives (SSDs). Once downloaded, the content can be accessed via any SCSA-enabled device such as a connected TV, laptop, Blu-ray player, tablet, mobile phone or game console.
