Turner And Cyber Group Studios Announce New Co-production “Taffy” For Boomerang

Taffy-Boomerang

HONG KONG (February 13, 2017) – Turner and Cyber Group Studios have joined forces to create a brand-new animated series, currently entitled Taffy, for Turner’s second flagship kids’ channel Boomerang across international markets.

Based on an original creation from Cyber Group Studios and developed with Turner, Taffy follows the non-stop, slapstick extravaganza faced by loyal hound dog, Bentley. His life is turned on its head when Bentley’s billionaire old-lady-owner, Mrs Muchmore, takes in a raccoon called Taffy – an imposter posing as a wide-eyed, fluffy angora cat.

Each instalment sees Bentley try to expose the intruder – while super-clever Taffy handily frames the dog for every one of his exploits and disastrous messes. Whether travelling from Mrs Muchmore’s luxurious mansion, to a five-star cruise, to jet-setting international adventures or visiting the president, mayhem is sure to follow.

The 78×7-minute series, which will be produced in France, will join Boomerang’s line-up of funny, multi-generational shows like Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, Mr Bean: The Animated Series and Grizzy and the Lemmings from Q4 2018.

Cecilia Persson, Turner’s Vice President of International Kids Acquisitions and Co-productions, said: “With its classic-look animation style and timeless, slapstick humour, Taffy couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Boomerang. We’re very excited to be working with Cyber Group Studios to produce the show, and further our efforts to build Boomerang as a second flagship kids’ channel with a strong, refreshing pipeline of content.”

Pierre Sissmann, Chairman & CEO, Cyber Group Studios commented: “It is an honour and a thrill for the Cyber Group Studios’ team of artists and authors to be working alongside the Turner International team to develop a new series for Boomerang. I hope this idea we had, Mike de Seve of Baboon Animation and myself, a couple of years ago, of creating this new slapstick character of Taffy, will become a great addition to the line-up of one of the most prestigious cartoon channels in the world.”

Over 25 million users streamed a single match, accounting for a bulk of India’s internet traffic on that day

MUMBAI – February 13, 2017 – Hotstar, India’s largest premium video streaming platform, leveraged Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), a global leader in content delivery network (CDN) services, to establish several new online viewership records on its platform for live sporting events during the recently concluded India-England series. On the second One-Day International (ODI) held on the 19thof January, more than 25 million users watched the match on the platform, accounting for a majority of the Internet traffic from India on that day. The viewership peaked at more than 3 million concurrent viewers on the platform during the final T20 match of the England series, establishing a new high in the Asia Pacific region[1].

India’s emergence as the world’s second largest smartphone market[2] is reflected in the dramatic growth in traffic witnessed by Hotstar, backed by Akamai’s Intelligent Platform, which saw more than 75 percent of viewers streaming the match from mobile networks.

Hotstar, an Akamai customer since its launch in February 2015, delivers millions of hours of sporting and general entertainment content backed by Akamai’s Media Delivery Solutions every week.

“We are seeing dramatic growth in our viewership every month, including in cricket. As millions of new users embrace Hotstar as a way of life, the platform is seeing new highs in sports viewership as well. As data costs fall dramatically, and users increasingly look to their mobile as the primary screen, we are starting to see the emergence of Hotstar as the primary destination in cities with more than a million in population. This trend will accelerate in the next few months, especially during IPL, and we rely on Akamai’s solutions to ensure that we are able to scale in line with this vertical growth in demand,” said Ajit Mohan, CEO, Hotstar.

“Globally, the smartphone is becoming a key instrument to viewing live sporting events. We saw a significant majority of users accessing content via mobile for this ODI between India and England, making it the largest audience for a sporting event on the Akamai Platform, in Asia. Hotstar is truly leading the change in this paradigm shift in India, and we are proud to partner with Hotstar to bring new features and innovations to provide an unparalleled end user experience,” said Parimal Pandya, Vice President, Media, APJ, Akamai Technologies.

As the Internet becomes faster and more accessible in India, brands can expect app downloads and usage to surge. Per a recently released App Annie report[3], Android users in India spent close to 150 billion hours on apps in 2016, leading app usage in the world. Indian users also downloaded apps over six billion times, surpassing America, the previous world leader.

13 February 2017, Singapore – Asian entertainment channel GEM concluded its search for singing talents in Asia with the crowning of Krissha Viaje from the Philippines as the winner in an audition held yesterday.  Krissha beat 11 other finalists to win the top spot and the chance to take part in Nippon TV’s biannual singing competition programme I Can Sing in Japanese!

Since the start of the online call for entries in December last year, the channel has seen an overwhelming response from participants all over Asia, which indicates the widespread popularity of Japanese content in the region.  From the entries, 12 finalists were handpicked and invited to attend an audition in Singapore.  They are from Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

“Singing in Japanese is not easy so we were surprised by the high quality of entries across South East Asia.  The overwhelming response from aspiring singers reflects the popularity of Japanese pop culture in this region.  On behalf of GEM, I congratulate Krissha on being crowned the Asia finalist and wish her every success for the final round of I Can Sing in Japanese! in Tokyo.  GEM, together with our partner and leading content producer, Nippon TV, will continue to deliver the latest entertainment from Japan and bring our viewers more on-ground, interactive experiences that will deepen their connection to Japan,” said Virginia Lim, Senior Vice President & Head of Content, Production & Marketing, Sony Pictures Television Networks, Asia.

Yuji Gobuichi, the Japanese director of the programme, also remarked: “We are very impressed by the immense talent we have seen in the entries from Asia.  I believe that Krissha is the next big thing in the making and that the rest of the contestants are also ready to take on other global singing competitions.”

A long-time fan of Japanese shows, Krissha impressed judges at the audition with her soulful rendition of ‘Precious’ by Yuna Ito, the theme song from the movie ‘Limit of Love Umizaru’.  Although the high calibre of the other finalists made it a tough competition,Krissha stood out with her precise diction and expressive singing, which judges said they were immensely moved by.  Speaking after learning of her win, she said: “I am so excited for this chance and I cannot thank the judges enough for selecting me as the winner.  I am looking forward to doing my country proud at the I Can Sing in Japanese! competition!”

Krissha will participate in the coming season of I Can Sing in Japanese!, which is slated for filming later this year. The singing competition show features non-native Japanese speakers from all over the world who have a passion for singing Japanese songs.  The performers are assessed by a panel of industry experts based on their pronunciation, singing skill, and how they express their love for Japan through their songs.

Viewers can catch the broadcast of the coming season of I Can Sing in Japanese! later this year, first and exclusively on GEM (Singapore: Singtel TV Channel 519; Philippines: SkyCable Channel 116). For more information on the show, please visit www.gemtvasia.com/ICanSing.

Spanish National Police, Premier League and Irdeto Join Forces to Shut Down ISP Running Pirate IPTV Subscription Business

Global anti-piracy investigation leads Police to raid a local ISP in Malaga offering unauthorized Premier League matches and 100+ international pay TV channels

AMSTERDAM , 09 February 2017 – The Spanish National Police announced today that they have successfully raided a store in a Calahonda shopping center in Málaga, Spain owned by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) suspected of hosting a large-scale illegal IPTV streaming business, thanks to a collaborative effort with Premier League and Irdeto. Investigations revealed that the ISP in question, known as “Y Internet,” was being run by two U.K. citizens and providing unauthorized online subscription services featuring more than 100 international pay TV channels, including Premier League matches. At the time of the raid, five of the company’s 10 employees were present, including the system administrator who was in charge of the operation of the servers used to provide illegal access to the channels, an IT technician in charge of preparing the illicit devices and three sales managers. Y-Internet sold illegal IPTV service packages with annual contracts to the large foreign population in the Malaga region, including hotels, pubs, neighborhoods and individuals. This included reception devices that were adapted to receive decrypted pay TV signals without authorization. An Irdeto investigator told the Police that he went to the store in the shopping center where the employees showed him the device and services available. The representative supplied as evidence the reception device and a premium subscription purchased for 450€ from the store.

The investigation was initiated by the Premier League as part of a global crack down on illegal online redistribution of its live broadcasts. Engaged by the Premier League for piracy detection and investigative services, Irdeto’s team of experts worked closely with the Spanish National Police to gather information and evidence leading to the raid.

Premier League Director of Legal Services, Kevin Plumb, said: “The raids conducted by the Spanish authorities, supported in this case by Irdeto’s expertise, are a positive example of law enforcement taking piracy and IP infringement seriously. This approach is essential for organisations like the Premier League – and other creative industries – as our model is predicated on the ability to market and sell rights and protect intellectual property. It is because of this that clubs can invest in star players and managers, and world class stadiums – the very things fans enjoy about our competition.”

“These raids follow a recent case we brought in the U.K that saw a supplier of IPTV devices which enable mass piracy of Premier League football sent to prison for four years. It was the first case of its type and the fact police, both in the UK and in Spain, are now targeting and arresting others selling similar devices is further evidence for consumers that they are illegal.”

Once sufficient evidence of illicit activity was found, the store in Malaga was raided by the Police. While entering the premises, the agents were confronted with strong security measures inside including a surveillance system that allowed the owners to supervise the employees from the UK, where they are currently living. The raid alerted the owners who tried to remotely delete and destroy files, payment transactions and clients’ records. However, the quick and effective actions of the Police prevented this from happening.

“We are grateful to the Spanish Police for their support and decisive action against IPTV piracy,” said Mark Mulready, Senior Director, Cyber Services & Investigations at Irdeto. “We will continue to work closely with our customers, partners and law enforcement agencies to detect, analyze, investigate and counter all types of piracy affecting on-demand and live real-time content. This is a growing problem affecting content owners, broadcasters and operators across the world. Efforts like this are more critical than ever and set an example that piracy will not be tolerated.”
