New Zealand started to auction capacity in the 3.5 GHz band for WiMAX deployment in 2006 with a second auction in 2008. The band was channelized into 21 MHz and 7 MHz channel pairs. New Zealand has auctioned 77 MHz in the 3400 MHz band from 3410-3487 MHz. A total of eleven paired 7 MHz lots were auctioned to five commercial companies with the Crown retaining two lots for operation as area (regional) licenses. The licensees are BCL (2x21MHz), Compass (2x 7 MHz), NZ Telecom (2×7 MHz), TelstraClear (2×21 MHz), and Vodafone (2×7 MHz). New Zealand depends heavily on satellite services and has no plans for BWA in the band 3 600 – 4 200 MHz. National position on 3.4 – 4.2 GHz band under WRC-15 agenda item 1.1:
