Eurosport makes waves with international surfing association deal

  • 2016 World Championships highlights to be shown on Eurosport in Asia-Pac
  • Surfing set to debut at the next Summer Olympic Games

Singapore, 14 October 2016 – Eurosport has strengthened its association with the Olympic Games after agreeing a partnership that will see highlights of the 2016 ISA World Championships broadcast in the Asia-Pacific region.

With surfing set to reach brand new audiences across the globe when it debuts at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Eurosport’s partnership with the International Surfing Association (ISA) comes at a time when the sport’s profile is set to grow immeasurably.

The deal is the first ISA has announced since surfing was officially welcomed into the Olympic program by the International Olympic Committee in August. Broadcast in 47 countries, Eurosport Asia-Pacific will show highlights from each of the four ISA World Championship events held during the 2016 season starting with the competition in Costa Rica.

Eurosport Asia-Pacific will also show the 2016 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship from the Azores, the 2016 ISA Fiji Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard World Championships in Cloudbreak, Fiji and the 2016 ISA Stance World Adaptive Surfing Championships from La Jolla, USA.

Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton said: “Surfing is a great, high-energy, youth-orientated sport and the stunning seascapes and dynamic action on the waves make it perfect for TV. The sport’s inclusion on the Sports Programme of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games ties in perfectly with our forthcoming status as an Olympic broadcaster and we are looking forward to working together to take surfing to more people globally.”

ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said: “This exciting new partnership with Eurosport Asia-Pacific is further evidence of the ISA’s ambition to grow and develop surfing outside of its traditional markets. We have seen huge growth of the sport across the world in recent years, especially in Asia, Latin America and Africa. We are thrilled to partner with a future Olympic broadcaster to showcase surfing in 47 countries throughout Asia Pacific – a region of huge potential for the sport.”

In June 2015, Discovery Communications and the International Olympic Committee signed an agreement that will give Eurosport exclusive television and multi-platform broadcast for 50 countries and territories in Europe for the next four Olympic Games, including the Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang 2018 and Beijing 2022.

Airing details:

  • Highlights of the Vissla ISA Junior World Surfing Championships will premiere today, October 14 at 1330 local (GMT+8).
  • Several repeat timings including this Saturday, October 15 at 1930, and Sunday, October 16 at 1630.

LONDON – September 6, 2016 – In line with its strategy to bring premium content to more viewers on more screens than ever before, Discovery Communications has appointed Ralph Rivera to the newly created position of Managing Director, Eurosport Digital. He will begin the role on September 26, based in London, and will report to Michael Lang, Executive Vice President of International Development & Digital for Discovery Communications, as well as work closely with Peter Hutton, CEO of Eurosport, and his leadership team.

Eurosport is the number one sports destination in Europe and connects fans and athletes around the greatest sporting events across all screens. Rivera is charged with leading the aggressive expansion of Eurosport’s digital businesses, which today include Eurosport.com – the continent’s number one sports news website, and Eurosport Player – the leading subscription-based OTT sports platform across Europe giving fans an all-access pass anytime and on any device in 52 countries. He will collaborate with local teams to drive innovation for next-generation digital sports products and make the brand’s content available across all screens, to enhance viewers’ digital sports experience.

With hundreds of millions of mobile data subscribers and growing OTT momentum via connected TVs, Europe provides a significant strategic opportunity to leverage both Rivera’s successful track record of creating immersive digital video products and Discovery’s recent investments in premium sports content. In Asia Pacific, Eurosport reaches more than 10 million fans.

Rivera joins from the BBC, where he spent six years as Director, BBC Digital and was responsible for all of the BBC’s digital media services, leading on the implementation and operation of BBC iPlayer as it grew by over 300% and delivering the first truly digital Olympic Games for London 2012, setting a new standard for live sports coverage online. Prior to the BBC, Rivera spent ten years at AOL, most recently as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Games, where he transformed the division from a loss leader to one of their most profitable media units.

Commenting on the appointment, Lang said, “Recognized as one of the most forward-thinking digital executives in the world, Ralph brings extensive knowledge in the direct-to-consumer space, with a deep understanding of the digital landscape in Europe and a strong reputation for innovation and transformation. His product-centric mind set and technology orientation will help us to grow Eurosport Digital, which is one of Discovery’s top priorities, as we continue our march to making sports and all of our content accessible to viewers across all screens, in a highly meaningful and profitable way.”

Hutton said, “Eurosport is focused on the further acquisition and delivery of locally relevant, premium sports content that will continue to attract more subscribers to the Eurosport Player.
